Auto Paint

Who has the connections to auto paint? I am getting close to painting my CJ and want to find both info and a RME connection on paint. I have taken the time to learn the auto body skill, I want to have a good looking jeep when I am done, so no "rattle can" answers Where to buy it? What paint to buy (I understand PPG is the good stuff). Who has info?

i just painted mine. i got everything from this place in orem just north of center street on 1200 west. they have a section of mismixed. i got a whole gallon of the good stuff for about 40 if i remember right. i was able to buy everything needed from all the chemicals to mix into the paint and clear, the paint, the primer, the clear, soap and degreaser, a really sweet gun for shooting the topcoat and clear, air filters, plastic to cover things and the bill came out under 500. i got everything i needed. that was my first experience with painting, and i thought it was a good deal. check it out, and good luck with it

Who told you ppg is the good stuff?? I'm a painter in a local bodyshop. You first have to decide how much you want to spend, then color, then how long you except it to last. I would say for a crawler go with Sherwin williams because its good paint and fairly inexpensive. But if you want top quailty then go with Glassrit or Standox or maybe even dupont. There's alot that goes into buying paint if you don't want to be ripped off. Pm me if you need any help or i can hook you up with a deal. Thanks, Jeremy

ppg is not good? Basecoat/clearcoat is very nice. However it's a Crawler. Rattlecan it. If not then go with our local "Northstar Coatings" paint manufacturer. Pretty much the same thing as Dupont's "Imron" but cheaper.

I haven't sprayed Standox for years (obviously), but the guys I know that used to spray it (way back then) with me won't touch the new stuff. They're using SW Ultra 7000 or something now and LOVE it ($$$).

Glasurit is AWESOME, but I think a little overkill for a trail rig. Something you want to keep nice, but still use, it's a good choice ($$$$) as the clear buffs like nothing else I've ever used before. I've heard similar about Sikkens, but don't have any personal experience.

I can't speak from experience on PPG base/clear, but the single stage is actually pretty good stuff for the dollar.

DuPont products and I don't get along. I'd rather not spray ANY DuPont ever again.


My vote, Sherwin if you want a 'budget' paint that will look nice, wear decent and repair OK. If you've got a trail rig, buy some cheaper single stage and bomb it and if you've got a show rig do the Glasurit or Sikkens.

Good info, that is what I am looking for. Sounds like I am the Sherwin Williams kind of guy, I want it to be look nice but I can't justify expensive paint, this is no show rig. Something that the scratches buffs out well on sounds like a good idea as well. At my pace I am a few weeks from buying paint, but I will send out some PM's when I get closer. Thanks for the info.

Most paint stores have it. I believe Mountain West carries it (33rd South and 60 westish), but if not try Piersons (3400 S Mainish--next to the Jiffy lube) or anybody else in the phonebook.

The fact is, I think you can get good results if you know the chemicals. I happen to know Sherwin and I can't make DuPont work for me to save my life (that's what I sprayed my blue truck with---Pissed me off to wash it for 6 years but it looked OK---That thing would have been SWEET with the same effort with Sherwin product). ALL paint mfg.'s have various levels of paint. You can get the tractor paint (cheap, expect shine to last about 1-2 years with good care)--THIS type is what I'm spraying my YJ with--, kind of a 'Chevy' type paint (decent quality single stage or cheaper base/clear) that will work and hold up for a while with good care or 'Cadillac' {GM's probably a bad analogy--Mercedes, BMW, Nissan have GREAT factory paint} that will buff and be a joy to care for $$$${and you better like it, because you just PAID lots}.

If you're spraying it, go with the brand you (or your painter) feel most comfortable with. Follow the directions EXACTLY, (prep, primer, sealer, mixing, pot pressure, etc.) and you'll do fine. It's not rocket science, just a bunch of details and a little luck/skill to get a nice job.

Single stages are pretty easy and fairly forgiving. You painting a trail rig or something nicer? With paint, you pretty much get what you pay for. I painted Carls buggy with some cheaper single stage from Piersons that I was fairly impressed with. Seems like it was roughly $120-130ish with enough hardeners (maybe I didn't use a hardener?) and reducers to mix a gallon of paint. I need to go check out some stuff out for my YJ one of these days. I'll get the brand if you're interested.

What's your time table? Wanna split a booth rental?

Like has been said before, follow directions, take your time, and if you aren't familiar with the stuff you are using - shoot a test panel of some sort first.

If your memory goes that far back, my Jeep and the old red truck were shot with S/W Ultra 7000. It's fer sure great stuff (I never once waxed either of em), but it's very pricey.

Lately, I've been buying paint off Ebay from a guy in New Jersey. I was skeptical at first being Ebay crap and all, but it's great stuff and dirt cheap. I haven't bought paint locally since. The one drawback is, he only offers a dozen or so colors.

It turned out really nice (makes me wish I would have washed it first). Due to my expert driving skills, I had to snag another gallon, and repaint about half the truck a year later. The paint was still a pefect match. This last time, I just thinned it and shot it, and it looks fine too.

You're kidding, right????? No, that would have doubled the painting cost... Needless to say, this one's never seen a coat of wax, but no fade or oxidizing after a year outdoors.
