Took the wife & dogs up Big Cottwood, through Gaurdsmans Pass, into Midway, then up SR220 to Pole Line Pass and down into AF; putted around AF then cruised home.

The AT Oil Temp light came on 3 different times; once passed Gaurdsman as we cruised into Midway, once halfway up SR220 where you turn off for Bakers Fork Trail toward AF, and once again almost to Pole Line Pass. Each time we stopped in the shade and let the engine idle for 20-30mins (Per OM instructions), then shut the engine off and sat for another 15-20 before the light was off and we'd continue on. Each time it overheated I noticed we didn't have reverse. Coming up over Gaurdsman pass I noticed that we lost the OD(4th); had trouble shifting automatically - had to shift manually. We also lost brakes as we cruised into Midway; let the truck idle for 15 and sit off for another hour. All systems were back to normal and truck felt solid after the long wait while we ate lunch in Midway. Headed up SR220 and over heated the AT again, sat an waited.. Then again.. Once in AF canyon the truck ran awesome with no issues; drove home @ 75mph and truck felt great; shifted fine.

This morning, Drive is not working, 3rd is not working, 1st, 2nd and reverse are working. No odd noises, just no power in D OR 3rd.

Will a flushing of the burned ATF with new filter bring it back to life? Is the AT shot for good?

Thoughts?

Flushing out old, burned ATF with fresh ATF will just kill the clutch packs quicker, unfortunately.

Have you checked the fluid level after this morning? Sometimes a transmission low on ATF won't engage in gear, but your situation sounds different. You may have to take it to someone and have it officially diagnosed. I don't know enough about the FJ62 transmission, but IMO it may be wise to start saving up for a H55f manual or start looking for a replacement auto trans. :(

from another forum:
I just did mine about 3 months ago and it's working fine. (I'm a radio tech, not a mechanic!!) The rebuild kits are fairly inexpensive (about $250) and with all the othere parts I replaced I ended up at around $2K. I splurged and bout an upgraded valve body from Rodney at Extreme Transmissions and that was about $800.

Check out this trhead to see what is involved in rebuilding it; http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-te...nic-style.html. It is an excellent run down of his rebuild.
