Axles vs axels

Why does everyone spell axles like this "axels" is there something I am missing!
Sorry its just been bugging me.

"dual cardigan" driveshaft (actually its "dual cardan")
"Dom" tubing (D.O.M. is an acronym which stands for "drawn over mandrel")

Whats even more rediculous is when people try to sound out "HREW", as if its a word.
