Ball joint movement

Is there an acceptable amount of vertical ball joint movement? I feel like there shouldn't be any movement vertically. I was putting new brakes on my Dodge and noticed there is about a 1/4" of vertical movement on the knuckle.

I'd say they are shot. My rule is any discernable play is too much in ball joints.

That's how I was leaning as well. I've only done ball joints when there was a bad shake in the steering, and my truck doesn't have any. So I wasn't sure if they were toasted or just nearing replacement time.

I'm not super excited about using any store brand ball joints, since I can't find spicer/Dana anywhere. I'm looking at the synergy and kryptonite options. Do you guys have any experience with them?

Ive been reading up on ball joint deletes. Im pretty interested in them for the next time around. Anyone running them? How are they?


(Oh, and there should be no up/down movement. They can be as loose and sloppy as can be, but no up and down.)

The deletes would be nice or the dynatrac ones, but they're out of the budget for now.
