Bicycle recommendations

As I discussed, my Son is going to Ohio on this mission. It looks like it will make sense to buy a bike local there so shipping, ect doesn't kill me. My son wants to ride trails on P-day so I kind of want a little better bike than the "standard" one.

We are looking at Cannondale Catalyst 2,3,4.

I am leaning to the 2. Is it worth $80 more than the 3? It's not a huge deal, but I don't ride very often, so don't know too much. The better components look like it would be worth it.

I always laugh when I see missionaries on mountain bikes... They should really be riding flat bar road bikes, or hybrids. If he wants to get off-road I think a gravel bike would be slick too.

Funny you say that, I had a comp that would buy a new bike all the time, so he went through a beach cruiser, trike, bmx freestyle, ect. The beach cruiser and the trike sure made for slow going.
