If it's white smoke-- check for coolant in the cylinders-- head gaskets and the like.
If it's black-- you are running rich, but this would normally turn the check engine light on.
If it's blueish-- you are getting oil in the combustion chamber.
You can sort of tell where it's coming from by when it smokes-- if it blows blue smoke on start up and then goes a way, it may just be valve seals/guides. If it does it when you rev the engine (accelerate) it's probably piston rings. This isn't a hard and fast rule, it just shows you were to start looking.
Get it taken care of soon so you don't kill your catalytic converters.
