Be prepared, crappy trip report below.:(
We headed down to the Hot air Balloon festival in Bluff Utah this weekend. We stayed in Monticello and then drove down. It was nice and warm in Bluff. I wore a Tshirt all day and never had a problem. 46-50 degrees! what a beautiful weekend.

Some of you are thinking, "The hot air balloon festival in bluff sounds super lame". I thought the same thing. It was REALLY awesome. We spent the day hiking in the area. We first drove into the San Juan hill trail head. I looked up and thought, "the pioneers were freaking amazing" We hiked to the top and I can't believe they took wagons up that trail. Just after the Crux of the hill there was a saying carved in the rock. It said "We thank thee o God". It was an interesting day. I didn't get too many super amazing pictures, but got a few with the phone.

We then hiked down and walked a mile or so over to the river house ruins. They were in really good shape and you can walk around inside of them as long as you stay off the walls. We even saw some pottery sherds, as well as maze cobs. You can camp really close to them I think I will be doing that later on in the year.

We went back into Bluff were the festivities were in full swing at the senior center. They have a cook off in the center. You go in, eat as much as you want from all the different cooks. It is all free! If you want to put a donation in for the cook you feel did the best job you can, but you don't have to. I gave my kids a dollar and the wife and I each picked our favorite. We got dinner and dessert for 4 dollars

Then we drove up to the indian house(not worth it) and bluff cemetery(cool). Many cool old graves. Beautiful spot, I would love to be buried there.

We went back to the senior center were we parked on the very worst softball field in the entire world. Imagine if Ethiopia made a softball field in a small village and then add a bunch of rocks. There were 7 balloons there and they all began to fill up as it got dark. After it was good and dark they started to light up like giant Christmas lights. I wish I had better photography skills because this was much cooler than I thought it would be. On the way home we almost ran over a Giant bull Elk. At least I assume the humongous animal with yggdrasil growing out of its head was an elk.

The next day we went sledding at the Monticello golf course which was a lot of fun. We came home today after driving the looking glass road just outside of Moab. If you have never done the looking glass road it is worth it. Just stay on the road past the arch and see the "Rock People Compound". Over all it was a good trip. Here are some crappy pics. I love sideways pictures so suck it.

Good stuff, just finished a great book about the original settlers of Bluff (Indians and Outlaws: Settling of the San Juan frontier by Albert R. Lyman), really has me wanting to go wander through town and some of the remote outpost towns in the Bluff vicinity.

It is a super cool area down there with a ton of history. We stopped at the spot called Rincon or the Corner on the banks of the San Juan river. Some remains were still around of the store. It really made me want to go back and check stuff out. I will have to grab a copy of the book and read through it. I

Yup, the books talks about the store as well as the Indian battles that took place at the store or nearby. I've been to Bluff a few times, but as I read more about it I want to go back :D

Awesome. I need to explore the bluff area more. I'd love to do that hike. I read about that inscription in "the undaunted' and I didn't realize it was still visible.today

Since my sister moved to Monticello a few years ago we have explored the area more than I ever thought I would. So much cool stuff down there that I dont think you could ever see it all.

What happened to the gravity in Bluff? You're all sideways and stuff.

Gravity is a harsh mistress-the tick

That book was part of the inspiration for me wanting to see stuff down there. I would love to do the HITR trail while listening to undaunted on CD:D

Very cool!

I wish you would have been there to take good pictures.

Looks like a lot of fun! I'll have to plan a trip down there with my kids one day!

The kids really enjoyed it. Let us know when you head down, we would love to tag along.
