Ryan Iverson bought a detroit form a gut that was broke took it to a machine shop and had it welded, its been in the front axle of his scout for about two mounts with no problem....yet?

That "guy" was me. The Detroit didn't break; the inside of the bearing journal was damaged when the D44 housing broke and the tube came out of the pumpkin. Just an FYI. Oh, and I called Tractec about getting another case half and they said it would be almost as much as buying a new locker, so that is what put me over the top to just upgrade to a 60 :)

Somewhat off topic: Doesn't Detroit have a lifetime warranty?

If they are like Warn, then the Warranty only covers the origanal purchaser, he might have to cough up a receipt to get it replaced under warranty. But it sure is worth a try!

If the axle is bent BAD then you can ussully see it from looking at it from different angles. If it's not too bad then you may have to pull both axle shafts out and "sight" through the axle housing looking for a curvature.
How long did you drive on that axle after it broke? The wear on the broken peices is odd, really smoothed down. Were the bearing caps loose?

Check around to different retailers. My freind replaced some parts is his locker (Detroit) and paid less than half a new one (interneal peices though), I think he called Randy's ring and pinion. Not sure though. Good luck with that.

Well the guy from Detroit called me back and after looking at the pics I sent them things are looking good. I'm sending the locker back to Randy's Ring and Pinion, they in turn will send it back to Detroit. The guy I spoke with said that it did indeed look like the locker failed. so.... I might get a free replacement within the next 2 months.......... :)

I'll keep ya updated.

So for those of you that have broken Detroits, how did you know it was broken? I've had one in the front of my 4Runner for about 3 years. Lately my steering has been really tough. I'm putting in 30 spline Chromoly Longfields right now, so I pulled the third member to check out the Detroit. Nothing in the gear oil, no visible problems that I can see. Should I pull it out of the third member and take it apart or just keep running it? I guess my question is that when a Detroit goes south does it not lock at all or does it lock solid like a spool? Mine doesn't seem to ratchet at all.
