I just pulled the rear end apart on the Sidekick to see what broke. It's a Toyota with a lockright.... well what's left of one. The center pin was broke in three pieces and the pieces chewed up the carrier and the pinion. any thoughts as to what happened?? did the center pin just break?? or did something else cause it to break??if possible I'd like to avoid it happening again

Don't Lockrights give you the option of a 'Upgraded' Cross shaft? It's like $50 more or something?

Looks like you discovered why.

But, congrats on reaching that level of breakage! :p

IIRC, the Toyota Cross shaft is a piece of hardened steel, which is hard to upgrade on.

There's a reason they're called lock wrongs... ;-)

I'd get a FULL detroit (not the Detroit Soft Locker, or EZ locker, or whaterver it's called), or if it's a trailered rig, put the spider gears back in, and weld those puppies into the carrier.

When I putt my LockWrong in my cruiser, I also got 3 spare carriers for WHEN the lockwrong grenades. I also keep the spider gears and a spare cross shaft in my tool box. THis will help.

HTH.

The name is misleading. The Softlocker actually has heavier springs that actually lock it up quicker and keep it from skipping teeth and banging as much. The cam ramps are slightly different also. I don't know for sure but having owned both I would guess that the soft version may be easier on the rest of the drivtrain. My old style detroit hit really hard every once in a while.
