Bucket list trips: Do them -- 2023 Buick GS Nationals is worth it to mbryson

As some of you may have noticed, I had a chance to do an automotive bucket list event for me. Had a GREAT time. Ended up going by myself and in some ways, that was kind of cool. If I wanted some nachos, I went and got some. If I was geeking on a ride, my wife wasn't over my shoulder wondering how long she'd be subjected to my new "friend" and waiting for me. (she's pretty patient but ...). I didn't have to ask anyone what they wanted to eat, etc.

Rental car. V6? Faster than I expected but not a car I would buy

I didn't know I liked green cars. The top is kind an odd color but this was a NICE car.

I've never seen one of these before. There were at least 9 at the event. One was racing in BSA (Buick Stock Appearing). For 1970, there were 678 of these made. 188 (I think that's right or close) in Apollo White, the balance in Saturn Yellow.

My personal favorite car. AMAZING car with a VERY cool owner and only missing 4 options.
Most of you know I don't like red but this is an exception. Cool tribute car

My take from this trip: I'm 52 years old. I just had someone that works for me pass away a month or two ago that was 40. I'm glad I did this bucket list trip. Go do your bucket list trips while you have health and desire to do the bucket list things. You can't do them all, but do some of them.

Hawaii

Trip to the US east coast to explore battlefields and other historic places (understanding the sacrifices of our nation is amazing)

Southern Caribbean cruise

DRIVE on a 2-3 week trip to nowhere but wherever (get in the car with an empty credit card, make decisions on right or left turns as you go--no plans in mind--find interesting stuff along the way). Bonus points if you have something vintage or unique to drive around and keep it interesting


There's more .... but those are what comes to mind immediately

I have no imagination or ability to think past my current stage in life. If I had a million dollars sitting in my garage, I don't even know what I would go do with my time.

Desert racing dirt bikes was the only thing that ever stood out as a dream for me.

That's pretty cool but I thought your wife went with you.

My idea of a bucket list trip has changed a lot over the years. I'm sure it says something that what I'd really like to do is drive, or fly, to northern Kentucky and take a class to build an arm chair. (I'd say take another wood turning class but all I have to do for that is drive to Provo.)

When we visited my wife's sister in 2018 in Rhode island my grand plan for the future was to sign up for a woodworking class back there and have the family chill at her sister's place for the week. I'd miss the museums and would learn something neat, she'd get to sit around and wait for her sister to get out of bed... Lol.

Marc, I love the idea of doing these kind of trips! That looks like so much fun!

I especially love that you did a trip by yourself. I believe traveling by yourself is so so good for the mental health (especially if you have kids and a wife). It reminds you that you exist as an independent human who is more than just a breadwinner. While I absolutely love and adore my family; sometimes I feel like all I do is serve. Maybe you feel the same way sometimes?

My wife and I often travel together and with our kids, but we still make time to do weekend or day trips alone. Like this last weekend: I rode a motorcycle out to watch the rock crawl in Delta. I always come back feeling more self satisfaction and worth.
I'd love to catch up and hear more details of your trip next time we do a Bewilder night.

I suffer from the same illness. Rock crawl comps all over the western United States is my dream. I’ve already done it (a lot) but want to do it more. Maybe some East coast events too? We’ll see.

I’m definitely desiring more trips sans kids but it’s hard with a 3 year-old and my mom aging rapidly. We did our first trip without kids last year and it was great. My 10 year old will be mature enough to watch the younger two before we know it and I’m excited for that.

I have no interest in solo trips like Stratton. I generally think being alone is the worst though 🤣

I totally get that people want alone time… I’m just not one of those people. I’m not advocating that my way is the right way, just that it’s my way 😆

I was wearing old school Adidas Superstar high tops yesterday (white), with shorts. And looking down at my shoes I actually thought about how back in the day I'd be touching them up .

Agree completely. Too often bucket lists are seen as a post-retirement thing and either life span or health don't allow them to happen.
Get out and do things while you are able.
