Just buy a basic Warn 8K w/ a hawse. They're pretty much the best bang for the buck while still being long term completely reliable. Not terribly fast, but I've used them to pull WAY more than they're rated for over and over again and never even phased them. Run the cable until its proper kinked then upgrade to some syn.

I have heard from several sources that the Smitty and HF winches are one in the same.
Smitty built, mile marker and a couple others are the same as the HF ones. I have a couple friends that run the 10000lbs HF one for many years with no complaints. I run a 2000lbs HF winch on my trailer and it has pulled many a dead vehicle on as well as both my buggies with no problems

If the costco one help up for 7 years, I would just look at getting another one. You will not have to change anything and it will drop right in.

I have also had the costco for about 7 years.

Oh, now see, that makes it tough. I thought I had my mind made up, and then you gotta go and do that. Now I'm conflicted - Engo E9000 with synthetic, or Warn VR8000?

What's the difference between the Warn VR series and the more expensive models? Are they made cheaper, or are they just as sturdy with fewer bells and whistles?

Warn divides their winches into three general categories: entry level, premium, and ultimate performance. The VR is entry level, while the M8000 is a Premium unit. As far as I could tell in my own research, the primary differences from one level to the next are internal componentry, improved sealing from the elements, and so on. Myself, I thought the extra c-note to go from the VR to the M was an easy decision... so that's what I did.
