Build up plans and questions

Ok here is the scoop I am more than likely going to be getting out of the military come this january, and the wifey has given me an 8k budget to get a "car" when I get out. Well I will be on terminal leave for about a month which means I am getting paid and doing nothing so I want to take on a project. Here is what I am thinking now I might get flamed but oh well I am a big boy and can handle it. Once again this is just a quickly put together list for a idea of what I want in the future. Ok here goes.
84 or 85 runner with blown engine or needing work- 2500$
Rebuild the engine if needed- 800$(done this once before)
Extreme Lift kit from Allpro offroad-1799
ProCrawler Tcase gears from allpro-399$
Profields+4340 chromoly inners+chromoly rears-679$
5:29 gears from Rocklogic-179$
IFS steering box- roughly 150$ that is what RL is selling some used ones for
Detroit rear locker from drivetrain superstore-490$
2- inch body lift-75$
4 black steel wheels-160$
35" TrXus MT's-640 if I wait for SukaB to have another groupbuy
Full Cage so I can take my son wheeling with me-??
I think that is it. Now I have some questions: Is there anything on here that I wont need? Has anyone done a fullcage on a runner if so how much did it cost?
Did I miss anything? I will be doing most of the work myself, I am sure my brothers will be helping me and my dad knows a lot of people(in the autoparts biz for 30 years) in case I run into a snag, so labor shouldnt be that much.
Thoughts, Flames, Ideas. Sorry for the long post. TIA

Honestly, I would consider a dual t-case setup instead of the gears for now. Two stock cases will combine for a 5.2-1 ratio, whereas the gears will give you 4.7-1. Once the duals are in, a gear swap can be done anytime down the road.

Are you going to be living in Cali, or back in Utah? Is there any way you can start picking up parts now, when you find good deals, and just hoard them somewhere? A month is not a lot of time, especially if you are waiting on UPS to drop off parts. It would be nice if everything was in one place to start with.

I thought about the dual cases but wouldnt that be a lot more expensive? Also from what I gathered from my other thread I didnt think I would really need them. I plan on gathering the parts while I am over here that is why I wanted to bring this up now. I am already getting excited I think I will learn so much from this I am sure most of it will be the hard way but oh well. I am not sure where I will be living wherever the jobs take me hopefully utah but I have lines on jobs in cali or texas but utah or texas are my two top choices

Marlin Crawler has the MC07 adapter for $399. You would need to pick up a donor case, you can find them for around $75.Here's a link:
http://www.marlincrawler.com/dualcase.html

I can tell you that even though you don't think you would use one, as soon as you see one in action, you will want one. I gaurantee that if you have one, you will be glad you bought it. :)

OH, and another thing, save yourself some headaches and find an '85 with EFI to start with. My personal opinion would be to go for an '88 or '89, but then you would have to deal with a solid axle swap.

I thought about going with the 88 or later but decided against it for a couple of reasons
1- it is harder to find one that late that is only 2k
2- I think it is 89 and up that they dont have the removable tops and as stupid as it sounds I really want that
3- The solid axle swap adds a good chunk of change to the overall cost and the wife is still not even big on this idea but I am the man and I will take a stand as long as she doesnt hit me too hard :(

They can be had for that if you search... I'll keep an eye out for you.

The '89 is the last year with the removable tops. The pickups changed body style in '89, 4runners changed in '90.

Ok I like the idea of dual cases now that I read a little more about them and understand them a little more. So now my question is what else do I need on Allpro they have a dual tcase crossmember I dont see why I would need that but I have been wrong before. Anyways thanks in advance.
P.S. I am suprised that noone has said anything about me trying to do all this but I dont even know how double Tcases work oh well maybe the hecklers are still asleep.

I better jump in here with some info... We sell used IFS boxes already modified for hydro assist for the $150 you mentioned. However, we have recently sold the remainder of those, even though it appears that we still have that up on the website (sorry about that). You're welcome to check back, or we can contact you when we have more available.

BTW, the 5.29's are $175. :)

Sounds like a nice project, good luck!

Like I said that is just rough numbers I was wanting some feedback on the setup mostly not the prices. I already talked to the other BROTHER about it anyways j/k.
Thanks Von I figured that but I just put that down because I have seen them that cheap in other places also.

Some thoughts...I just did the same thing last year, but I had no time limit. It's best to find a 'Runner in good shape for $2500 rather than one needing work - although finding a good deal isn't always easy when you're in a hurry. Rebuilding the engine would be a good route if you can find a deal on a vehicle with engine problems.

Extreme lift kit is good, but I'd buy just the stuff I need and save some dough...bilsteins (pro-comp ES3000s are great and much cheaper), shackles ($100/pr!?! - make your own), shock hoops (get ford ones for $15 ea. instead), are all things you don't need.

Don't waste time or money on Chromo rears. Stock shafts are WAY more than enough for 35" tires.

I like the flexibility of dual cases. I can use 2-low (2.28:1) for most of the trail, 4-low (2.28:1) for snow or mud, or 4-low-low (5.20:1) for crawling. I've found that low-low is too low for a lot of things. Keep in mind, though, that just getting gears is a lot easier and cheaper. $400 plus a few hours to install vs. about $8-900 plus a day to install and trips to the driveline shop. Adapter: $400 Extra t-case: $150 Front long-slip: $225 Rear shaft shortened: $50 Then again, you may want a long-slip anyway so it'd only be $200 more. You also need another hole for a shifter and a shifter boot. Then hope your CV rear 'shaft (if you get one) doesn't hit the horse collar - you'll need to clearance that. If you have rear heat, you'll need to spend some time moving the hoses. You'll want a new crossmember, too, to protect that investment. Dual cases are sweet, but also a lot of time and money.

Look for a set of used tires/wheels - you may get lucky and save some $$

Budget a good chunk of dough for miscellaneous crud. You're always buying cleaners, fluids, bolts, wires, tools, yada yada.

Look at AllPro's cage kit. HERE $350 for a DIY kit. I think they used to have a rear kit, too, but I don't see it on their site. Maybe give them a call and ask about it.

Thanks for the advice like. I really dig your rig it is what I hope to get one to look like one day. I will for sure look into making some of the stuff on my own the main reason that I got the prices for all of this is just in case I have to spend this money like this. I am not sure where I am going to be going after the month is up, I need to have a reliable vehicle. I also dont have the greatest fab skills but I will keep in mind all that you said.
