Did some finish welding around the fenders, capping off the ends and did the same thing to the open tounge. Also built a rack around the front cargo carrier, it should help retain cargo and give me points to tie down to. Lastly, I added a safety chain mount.

After blowing the frame off with compressed air, I wiped it down with acetone, rolled it outside and pulled off the wheels, tires, trailer jack & coupler. It's time for paint! I used Eastwood Chassis Saver, it's supposed to be UV resistant (unlike POR15) and has a nice gloss finish. I haven't painted anything for a long time and haven't used the Chassis Saver before, but it seemed like a good option for the chassis. I put a few coats down, now just have to let it sit and cure. Full cure is supposed to be 48 hours. So far, it's looking good.

Putting it back together... this paint dries fast, it's not tacky at this point.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with it! It's not perfect, but way better than rattle can and cheaper than powder coat. We will see how it holds up over time and with use. I just hope it holds up to rock chips and premature rusting.

Not that I am against painting it black, did you check to see what it would cost to galvanize it? That seem pretty durable to me

I didn't bother, I really wanted to do everything in this build myself, rather than pay someone else for the work. I hope the Eastwood Chassis Saver will hold up well over time. I don't expect it to be as good an powder coating, but a close 2nd would be nice!

The next step is to paint the tub, which is going to be quite a process. I'll need to prep, cover and seal the bare steel (including the lid and tailgate), so there will be sanding, primer and then the final color application. I've chosen Monstaliner for the tub, in Bright White and plan to spray it on, rather than roll on. I'm hoping the color will be a pretty close match to my White JKU. I think the Monstaliner will hold up very well over time, resist scratches and general wear & tear and it's also resistant to UV fading.

The process will go something like this....

• Rustoleum oil base metal primer, applied with spray gun.
• Light Scotchbrite pad the surface and vacuum or dry tack rag to remove dust.
• Mineral spirits cleaning or water and let dry thoroughly, no MEK or acetone over this primer.
• Let it cure 2 days before topcoating with Monstaliner.

Greg, double check that primer, you might be better off to let it cure for 48 hours, then do your scotchbrite and rub down right before mosntaliner

Yeah, that's correct.... the primer needs to cure for 48 hrs before the next step. It's oil based, I'm hoping I can cover it with primer tomorrow evening, let it sit and then apply the Monstaliner this weekend.

1st coat of primer on the tub, lid and tailgate! It needs to sit for 12 hrs before the 2nd coat, which will be 24 hrs because of work. I should be able to spray the Monstaliner Saturday evening but may wait until Sunday morning so I have all day to make a couple coats and do it right. Then let it sit, cure and start bolting the tub down, with the tailgate and lid!

I've covered most of the tub, all of the tailgate and lid. I need to hit a few spots with another coat, but so far so good. I really like this stuff... it has a VERY powerful smell, but when its sprayed on, looks amazing.

So one big thing I've already noticed.... when the tub, lid and tailgate were bare metal and in primer, I had left them sitting in the sun and they were impossible to handle without leather gloves, since they were so damn hot. Since they've been Monstaliner'd White and sitting out in the sun, they're so much cooler! I can pick them up with bare hands. That's a good change!

Looks like about $130 for the gallon and then $20 for a tint if you want it a color other than black.

is there a reason you went with this vs one of the competitors?

Yeah, pricing is correct.... I bought 2 gallons, think I'd only need 1 to 1 1/2 but at this point I'll use all 2 to cover the tub inside & out, plus the lid and tail gate. I also added the Economy Shutz gun, spent about $350 for the Monstaliner & gun. You can roll it on if you prefer, but I like the idea of spraying.

I have seen quite a few people coating their vehicles with Monstaliner and it seems like a high quality product. The biggest thing for me is being UV stable, so it shouldn't fade over time. Their color selection is decent, but there are some very loud options. I ordered paint chip samples earlier this year and liked what I saw.

I believe this color is a good match to my JKU's White paint, so I want to cover my hardtop before Winter with the exact same product. My hardtop is scratched in places, and the previous owner touched up scratches with a mismatched spray paint, so it looks crappy in places.
