Cafe's

When I was a kid I loved going to the cafe for breakfast. There were always men in cowboy hats sitting at the counter eating biscuits and gravy, talking about farming and hunting.
I am sitting at McDonalds and I feel like we have lost something. So, are there any old cafe's left?

Where are you located? I enjoy diners/cafe's a ton and always seek them out. Chick's Cafe on Heber's Main Street is pretty authentic. Mom's Cafe in Salina is awesome. There are a few places in Richfield that I'll stop at if I'm on 89, but I never remember their names. I just know where they are.
In SLC there aren't really any old school diners or cafe's like you're thinking, but there are many, many great breakfast spots that you'll be able to get good diner food. Blue Plate Diner has a great breakfast (not dinner, though). The Park Cafe. Penny Ann's. Eggs in the City. Millcreek Cafe is a new favorite. Again, no cowboy's at these places, but you'll be able to get some great biscuts and gravy.

Yes, of course the only clue we have on your location is near a McDonald's so that could be within 100 miles of anywhere in the lower 48 ;) Thus finding a recommenation may prove difficult. :D

I think he's in Herriman.

If you ever get up to Roy, Bee's Cafe is pretty good. Angie's in Logan is where everyone goes to on the weekends up here.

This made me think of Penny's, south of Stockton. Waaaaaay back in the day, 40 years ago, my Dad would take me hunting out in the west desert just about every weekend during the late fall and winter months. And we would ALWAYS stop at Penny's for cheeseburgers on the way home. The smell of a good grill full of burgers always makes me think about how good it felt to sit there getting warm, stuffing my face with a giant cheesegburther, listening to the sound of a country juke box and a pool table in action.

Haven't been in there since they blew up the old place though. Which, I think has been probably 20 years ago?

I miss Smitty's Golden Steak in Moab. First year my Dad and I went to the Easter Jeep Safari back in '93 we went there one of the two mornings we were there and it became an institution after that. It's gone now, but I remember we'd roll in there every morning every year we went to EJS or were in Moab. Always had the regulars at the bar, all the old school trail leaders like Ber Knight and Bob Castaldo were there. Good memories. Where I learned to save your bacon and eat it as a sandwich with your toast after you finish off the eggs and hashbrowns. Thanks Dad! (I know you'll read this).

Is Cotton Bottom gone? I drove past the other day and it looked closed. Can't say I'd be surprised. Worst "garlic" burger I've ever had and the service was below abysmal.

Busy Bee is a great dive bar. Their garlic burger was worlds ahead of Cotton Bottom. Best garlic burger in town IMHO is at Joni's Deli on 1700 S between State and Main. Fantastic! Only open for lunch, though.

Around here a lot of those cafe's went under years ago. Now the old-timers have their coffee at the service stations because they wouldn't be caught dead at an Ihop or Village inn lol :p One of my favorite Cafe's is LD's here in Richmond. I've been going there since I was a kid and not much-if anything has changed there. Great food and it's easy to loose track of time bs'ing with the locals and friends especially during hunting season. Tattles in Preston ID has a mean chicken fried steak too if you're ever up this way. Same thing with local farmers and ranchers and packed with hunters during the season :D

Thats the measure of a really good diner, I think.

Yep :D

Mean:

To describe something as exceptionally good or "cool", normally referring to an item/ non-living thing, but can be used to describe people also.
Ex. 1: My Mama make a mean turkey sandwhich!!
Ex. 2: Damn, that girls got a mean a$$!
Ex. 3: Our little league soccer team has mean dribbles.

This is all good info. Yeah, I am in Herriman, but I work all over and I am always looking for a good spot to meet the locals.
Sill's cafe in Layton is always a favorite.
Nothing like a place with a pool table is there?
I ran a search in my gps for cafe/diners and all I got was "Starbucks", sad world we are living in.
I love to sit in a corner booth and read a book and observe locals chewing the fat.

I never ate at Penny's before they were sold. Current owners also own Virg's. But the food at Penny's is good. Stockton Miner's Cafe is pretty good to, and serve up a mean root beer.
