no, karma presupposes the existence of a higher power. I do however believe in the law of averages.

I believe in action / reaction. :D

as do I, but... Karma("the law of Karma" and the "Law of Cause and Consequece") are all based on the religous beliefs of the hindu, bhuddist and even the christians, founded in the belief that the omnipitent enforces the balance of Right/Right and Wrong/Wrong, the Christian representation is evident in the golden rule, though hindu in origin, it was adopted almost instantly to be representational of the "Law of ******" and in the Judist belief of "an eye for an eye" so fundamentally I reject the concept of Karma.

If Karma is real I got a sh*t ton of good coming my way.

or maybe you were an asshole in a previous life ;)

'eye for an eye' predates Judaism to Sumerian rule. Specifically, the Babylonian king Hammurabi who is responsible for the oldest recorded laws (cleverly coined as the 'code of hammurabi'). Sumerians were polytheistic, although the geographic area became (centuries later) the birthplace of judaism and christianity and the basic rules passed down from Hammurabi influenced later generations and therefore became associated with Judaic history. I would have to say that "karma", "cause and effect", "goes around comes around", "eye for an eye" etc etc are all natural deontological values and as such the history and nomenclature associated with them developed concurrently in eastern and western civilizations. I think it's unfair to say the concept is a product of any specific religion or culture and more a product of organized human behavior.

did I at least sound like I was smart :cody:

I agree and think it's very evident in those religions.

...and even the christians...
I disagree. There's nothing in Christian doctrine to support it. Actually, it's contrary to it. The "golden rule" for example, isn't intended to get something in return for doing good, and it's certainly not a compulsory act for salvation. The Christian God commanded us to love one another, even our enemies, simply because it's the right thing to do.

In the christian sense the golden rule is to extend to others without requisit for return, in the gospel of John, where the "law of ******" is first indocterinated. The "ethic of reciprocity" is amended to include "love one another" also in Matthew and Luke, "turn the other cheek" which ammends again the "ethic of reciprocity" to discount an evil person. So the golden rule doesn't apply to evil people, which is why it's okay to burn witches at the stake, because they are evil.

Where Karma comes in, is more relevant to "Turn the other cheek", "Do not judge, and you will not be Judged..." "do not condemn, and you will not be condemned,..." "forgive, and you will be forgive". (Luke 6:27 & 32) It's indicated that even without reciprocation, you will be rewarded elsewhere in kind, which is Karma.
