Catylitic Converters

Hey, after removing my exhaust system this morning, it sounds like the catylitic converter is 'broken'. Lots of rattling around when I shake it.

What are your thoughts on after market cats? High flow? I found one on quadratec for $260, (Link) still need some more searching, but what brands are folks familiar with?

Please keep this thread on track, and don't go on and on about the kind of cats that go meow. ;)

The one from Summit is 50 state legal and that one is only 49. My guess is the Summit version will have the O2 sensor holes and the other doesn't.

I have the Summit version (Magna Flow 43035) in stock and they are $200 to your door.

I replaced mine in my '93 YJ a few years back for the same reason. I got a high flow one for $80. Can't remember from where, but it wasn't vehicle specific. I just measured how big of inlet and outlet I needed, as well as overall body size. If you know the dimensions you are looking for then you don't necessarily have to get one specific to your vehicle.

Exactly... And if you aren't buying a stainless steel one, then you will save some $'s, too.

Thanks, good advice all around. I need to stick with Stainless because in order to pull it (if I need to in the future) i have to pull the crossmember. Of course, with the new 3 piece that will be much easier, but either way, it is definately easier to get at stuff without the crossmember in the way.

Maybe not... I was able to cut out my exhaust system and move the cat forward without removing even the center part of the crossmember. There's a lot of room there...

hmmmm, that gives me something to think about. I may have to purchase new rear upper control arms as I still have the original 1st generation RE uppers. They have a bend not quite half way to the axle, and I think the new ones are straight. I'm concerned about this because the angle of the upper control arm mount is different on the multi-piece crossmember compared to the single piece.

If I move the cat forward, it gives me more room to make any necessary bends between the cat and the muffler (to insure clearance between the pass upper control arm and the muffler.

The cheaper ones have less precious metal in them and wear out way quicker. The more expensive ones might cost twice as much but last 3x as long. You can try to find a totaled Jeep at the junk yard with low miles and grab the cat off of that since with some vehicles if you use a high flow one it doesn't run good since the computer settings are for a stock cat. I'm not sure if that is the case on Jeeps though.

That's why I moved my cat forward... Doing so I was able to push that small muffler up beside my tranny and then turn down right after the crossmember. With my custom triangulation, there isn't much room for an exhaust pipe - unless I add a body lift, or make lots of sharp bends.
