Does anyone that uses GMRS radios actually have a FCC license? If so what is the cost?

I got mine. When I read in the instructions you have to be licensed I went to the website to check it out. It is free and took me about ten minutes to fill out. I would say that the license at this level is more of a registration process.

I went to the FCC site today to apply for a license and the fee is $85 :( An amatuer radio license is only $20.

It must be different then the one I got. My radios came with a web site you go to and fill out. I don't think I still have the stuff but I will look around.

Well I looked for the manuals and couldn't find them to see what I signed up for...knowing my bad memory it was the warranty :D (I still don't think it was though). It was also about five years back but I can't imagine them jumping that much in price. I do remember discussing it with my Father because we both purchased the same cobra radios at Big-5 at the same time and we both looked into it. He said it's just a free way for the goverment to keep track of us so he wasn't going to take the time to do it. I'll ask him if he can remember what we were looking at tomorrow when I'm over there.

Four things to think about when installing your CB-

#1 Make sure you mount it where you can hear it. Example for years I had my cobra 19 mounted under the dash on my cj5 and it worked great but was hard to hear at freeway speeds with the top off.. Now in my scrambler I mounted it on my cage above the rear view mirror, handy to use, easy to hear, I like it a lot better.

#2 Coax- it seems to work better in 4' multiple lengths (12',16',20',etc) so if you have to buy the longer length and coil it like a lasso under the dash. It is important to coil it because as time goes by coax doesn't like to be doubled over on itself, it will break.

#3 like everyone has said make sure you antanae is taller than your hard top.

#4 Decide before you start if you want your CB on when you turn you jeep off. It will change how you wire it up. Keyed hot line vs just a hot line.

Hope this make sense. I love my CBs even though I usually have a talkabout in the jeep also.

good luck

1. As stated almost any head unit will do but Cobra is a personal fav when the money is right.

2. Antenna and TUNING it is key. I have an SWR that I would be willing to assist someone in tuning if they needed it (note: I will not loan this out as it was a gift from my in-laws but I will meet you somewhere or we can use it in my driveway, whichever works for you)

PM Me if you need to tune your radio ;)

Jinx coax should not be in 4 foot lengths but in wavelength multipuls... a full wavelength for a cb is 36 feet so half would be 18 and quarter would be 9... so if you can use those lengths you will find it helps also if your going to use two antennas you need to separate them by at least 9 feet to keep them in phase... if they are closer together they will actually start to decrease the signal and not work as well... so pretty much dual antennas are out for jeeps...

Also I have an swr meter and would be glad to help anyone on this as well...

You are right, I couldn't remember if it was 3' lengths or 4'. When you explain it like you did it make sense. I know have a ton of it coiled up under my dash but I have been on top of corner canyon and talked to friends going over butterfield canyon, so it seems to work pretty good. :)

Thanks for the correction.

Bob @ Communication Producst (aka the Candy Store :D) is the bomb, dude has everything in stock and reasonable prices. Its a bit more than Wal-Hell, but then again you get someone that knows what a CB is ;)

Here is an article I read from somewhere...I can't remember where. I thought it had a lot of great info on CB's in it so I asked the author permission if I could use it and he said I could. I thought I would upload it for anyone that wants to read it.
