Check Engine Light!

Before EJS I had to go to Jeepers Off Road because my Shock Mounts Broke off. I had them weld on some new ones for me. When I went there my Engine Light Came on.

Jason showed me a little trick with the key. Turn accessories on and off 3 times and then it will blink at you and give you a code. My code was my O2 Sensor was gone.

I checked it there, cleaned it put it back in. The Light didn't come back on until I was on a trail down in Moab. It seemed to only come on around slow city driving or really slow 4 wheeling. I didn't want to replace it in Moab because prices at every store were jacked up. It would've been $70 for an O2 sensor when I could get it here for $45!

Then on my trip home it did not come on (about 2500 - 3000 RPM's the whole way home) And around city driving it still has not come on.

Jason told me if I don't replace it it will plug up my catalytic Converter. Since the light isn't coming on do you think it is still a problem and should be replaced or is it working fine again, for some odd reason?

Any info could help. Thanks.

Just be glad you dont have a OBDII BMW. My wifes Z3 is throwing a code that reads a bad heater on a post cat oxy sensor $200 (only at the dealer no Autozone, checker, ect.) just for the sensor and it is not even the sensor that is bad just the heater. The car has 4 oxy sensors 30,000mi on the car and already ones bad.

I don't know if you will plug up your cat but I guess if it caused you to run to rich it might.
Just put a new one in and be glad you can get one so cheep.

There is a chance that the cat can get plugged if you run around with the Jeep running rich.

My mom drives a Z3 as well! It's the white one with black softtop and the blue and black interior with brushed aluminum! A 2002 3.0! Awesome Car! I love doing donuts in parking lots in it!

Back to the subject... Thanks for the info... I'll go and change it tomorrow! I wasn't even sure what the stupid thing did!

What will you pay me not to tell your mom you are doing donuts in parking lots with her new car?

I've never really got on it too much. I sold a very very hopped up(low 12s) 5.0 mustang when we bought it and It was kind of a let down after that. It is a way sweet canyon cruzer though. At least she sprung for the faster model.

Good job, always get the bigger engine. So since you've never really got going in it... What do you do in it? Crawl over curbs at the mall? :D Just kidding.

We could talk about BMWs but I'm sure you want to put you mind at ease about your converter so what was the code? I'm sure there are 2 or 3 O2 sensor related codes.

I can't remember to tell ya the truth... It was 2 1/2 weeks ago when Jason did the code thing for me. Then he called someone who knew what the codes meant and told me my O2 sensor was bad.

He thought that on a 95 there would be 2 O2 sensors, one before the catalytic and one after it, but I only found one. It is before the catalytic, I pulled it out and it was all black.

Jason said if I wanted to give maybe 1000 more miles on it I could clean it off. I used some of his cleaner and wiped it down (then turned gray) Put it back in and check engine light didn't come back on until on a trail in Moab.

Ever since I have left Moab the Check engine light hasn't come on. So I'm wondering if it is bad or not, but I will replace it anyways because I bet the previous owner never changed it. It is probably the factory one!

Want me to check it tomorrow and see if it will give me the code again? I will count it off and record it tomorrow if it will work.

To solve the o2 problem for cheep, I would recommend taking off the exhaust and running a rotoruter through your cat and remove the check engine light bulb. :D

That would be cheap, but then I'd probably be running extremely rich! :D

The code for check engine light was:

3 big pause 5 small pause 5

Maybe that will help you out, I'm going to buy one right now as we speak.

Thanks again!

Oops my bad on the code...

2 small pause 1 big pause 5 small pause 5

I looked it up in my haynes manual...

21 is for the Oxygen Sensor (all problems with O2 Sensor are 21)

55 is end of code sequence.

I then looked at the wires closer, and you have a black one, a gray one and 2 white ones. One of my white wires was cut. So I just replaced it. Also I read that an O2 sensor has a computer reading that the engine light will come on at like 82,500 miles for it's replacement... And I have a little less than that. (actual miles!)

So it did need to be replaced and that was the problem. Thanks for the help!

if it hasn't come back on since moab, run it. I would pull the battery positive for 15 min to reset everything and start with a fresh ECM and clear codes. Then from there on out you will have accurate info in the ECM.

If it never comes back on, forget about it!!

That's a good point... Thanks! Have fun at Rattlesnake this weekend. Kurt invited me to come, and since I'm not locked up he was joking saying to just tow me the whole way with his strap! :D

I am thinking I might come along, but it depends on what time your all heading out and when all my plans go down. Long story. I will give Kurt a call if I can go, maybe ride with him.
