Chevy fuel issue????

Ok, so I'm having a brain fart and need some advice.

Here's the skinny,

197? Chev, supposedly a 383 stroker, but not 100% about that. Running an aftermarket tank. Has an edelbrock 750 or 800 cfm 4bbl, holley mechanical fuel pump and a universal electric pump. (I know you're not supposed to run both pumps, but installed the electric as a trail fix and never took it out, just used it for insurance.) It also had a fuel pressure regulator on it, but I took it off.

Ok, I'm having some carb issues, need to find someone that is good with edelbrocks to help me tune it up.

my electric quit working on me during the last Moab trip, no biggie, mechanical still worked. Well I was on my way home from work the other day and the mechanical quit.

My question is, I'm looking to convert to TBI, but it might be 6 months. Should I just buy a stock mechanical from the NAPA, remove the mechanical and just run an electric? Do I need a different electric to run the TBI or will the same one for the carb work?

I know I've had this discussion with someone (probably Tacoma) before, but I'm half asleep and not thinking straight.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the rambling. (loritab)

I think we did have that conversation LOL

I'd get an electric and a good regulator, and run the electric. Then when you swap over you'll be all set already. TBI is pretty low-pressure as EFI goes, so you won't be wasting the pump on the carb. I want to say TBI is like 17psi? but it's been a while since I looked into that... Jet makes an adjustable TBI regulator (that mounts right on the throttle body) for when you upgrade, too.

383 mods GENERALLY ask for more fuel. If I were you I'd start looking into a 454 throttle body to use as well... they're a little larger bore, and will probably make life easier when you get ready to swap. That is, if you really have a 383. :D

and yes, I have a spare

383?

A 383 will have a 400 crank, flexplate and balancer on it. look at the balancer and if it seems to be missing material right near the timing slash, (close to the block) it will be a 400 rotating assembly. yYou will have either a 400 or a 383. If there is no material missing on the balancer it is not a 400 or 383.

I agree with Tacoma. If it were me I'd put the electric in with a regulator. Then your set for your future plans and in the long run spend less money.

Good luck.

That's how my blazer is set up. It came with the tbi but when i tried to get it running off the throttle body it wouldn't work, (the computer was toast) i had to convert it over to a carb setup with intake and all. I still run the stock fuel pump, but they put out 45 psi so i had to put in a fuel pressure regulator with the bypass hook up to run the extra fuel back to the tank. You need the regulator because the carbs don't like anything above 12 psi. This has worked great for me so far and haven't had any issues with it yet. I say ditch the mechanical and put the regulator back in and you should be all right. I assume you have already jetted your Edelbrock?

If its a aftermarket crank it wont ness have the 400 balancer on it. You can get internal balanced crank for it. Depends on how much was put into the motor. If it was me, I would put another stock pump and run it that way. Ran my 383 off of a stock pump for 5 yrs never had problems and it ran 12.80 in a full body 72 camino.
