Cj-5

So my Bro-in Law is looking at buying a CJ-5. (It's the green lifted one on Main street in Lehi.) I'm gonna go look at it with him, but what should I look for as far as what to stay away from? I know all the usual sorts of things as it's a 30 year old vehicle, but is there anything specific to the CJ-5 that I should steer him away from?? If any of you from that area may have looked at it I would be very interested in your opinion. And is it worth the 4k asking price?

Quick thougts...

Look under the floor mats for the rust. Check the frame for cracks especially around the steering box, where the springs meet the frame, and over the front axle.

And CJ5's usually go for much less than a CJ7, so don't 5's and 7's mixed up when you compare price. I would expect a 4K CJ5 to look pretty sharp, where a 4K CJ7 would be average.

$4k is all relative. If it's a sweet ride with lots of extras in good shape, then it's worth the money... to the right buyer. What is your brother going to do with it? Does he plan to wheel it alot or is it a street cruiser. If he plans to join you Moab or the Snakes, you might want to talk him into a 7 or a YJ. They are the same price with a longer wheel base.

Don't get me wrong, I love CJ5s, I just wouldn't want to take one where I like to wheel.

From the street (driving by) it looks to be in pretty good shape but I haven't stopped to look at it. It seems to sit high in the front.....

This is exactly what I've been thinking. The only times he would even drive it is in the summer and camping/wheeling with me. Maybe one trip to moab a year. I would really prefer he get a YJ. Better frame, more reliable than a 30 year old vehicle, and especially for the longer wheel base. Besides I've got lots of parts for YJ's already:greg:

Meat thanks for taking a quick gander at it. I've seen it before and it does seem to sit higher in the front, but it is a nice looking CJ

Take a look at that one, and then keep looking around... there are quite a few on ksl that look just as good as the one parked in lehi

Thanks for those links.:) He isn't set on a CJ-5 or even a CJ at all. He caught the wheeling bug from me taking him out with me, and he wants to get something of his own now.

Just come and buy it, it is in great shape and I will go $3500.00 with a Dana 300 and T-176 thrown in on the deal.

So it's your's? I actually looked at it last night with my Bro-in-law. It is in great shape for a '78. New seats, and top good tires etc. I told him it was one of the cleanest Cj's I had seen.
