cj steering box brace

Well, unfortunately my steering box took a turd so I'm replacing the entire system with AGR stuff. My CJ7 came with a 4plus steering box brace that you drill a hole in one of the lower tabs on the box and send a bolt through. I'm really having a hard time drilling a hole in my new $350.00 AGR box.... I really don't think I need this brace on my daily drive with only 33" tires, do you? If so, when is the best box brace?

Thanks,

Ive got an 84 cj7 and run 37 inch tires with the brace shown. Seems to work fine and have had zero problems with it or the steering.

Thanks, I have seen that mount, looks easy enough to make. I have just read that it is the frame that cracks so adding a stronger support for the box mount doesn't seem to help the frame twist... am I missing something?

I guess I am one of the old CJ guys left here. I think you should be fine without it just running it on the roads, but I have seen guys get caught out on the trail without a steering box so if you want to play a brace is a good idea.

I run probably the same AGR box on my scrambler, and the brace I use ties to the opposite side frame rail and pinches around the steering box itself, so no holes to be drilled. I am not sure what brand it is, I got if off of someone on here 7-8 years ago..,

That is the design I'm looking at, just wondering, is it really all that strong?

I just got some heavy wall DOM that was 7/16" I.D. and sleeved the frame, then bolted the box to the frame. No brace. That was my favorite setup. I also swapped out the Jeep steering shaft joint at the box for a u-joint style coupling.

Shawn, I made mine that mounts this exact same way. I found that 3" (if I remember right) iron pipe slid onto the box nicely. I split the pipe on one end, welded on some tabs, then bolted it together to clamp the box.

I made one of those type too before I sleeved the frame for the DOM. It worked okay and was quick to fab up. I removed it when I sleeved the frame though.

good question, I feel pretty good about, is it super solid, no, but is in probably enough to keep it from starting to tear off the frame.

Kinda like how a little gusset goes a long ways to preventing a problem...
