Coilover/suspension questions

Hi i am pretty new here and really like the forum, I have some experience fabricating some basic suspension set ups but links and coilovers are over my head. I have done a lot of reading but still need a little help. I have a question about which coilover to choose. I have seen a few threads pop up about guys building light weight toyota buggies and i am in the process of saving parts for a build like this. My buddy is selling some fox 2.0 coilovers for 400 bucks for the pair. New never used, no coils, just the shock and 10 inches of travel. My question is, is 10in of travel enough? Or should i have my suspension set up and measured out for the right shock travel i need? These are just a super good deal (or thats what they appear to be) and i want to know if i should jump on them or hold out. I hope this makes sense and isn't too vague of a question but any help is appreciated. Again, cool forum and thanks in advance!

10" seems pretty limited for travel, I actually like my 14" coilovers I have in the front. I have 16's on the rear and feel that they are just too much. I also just depends on where you mount them and how much travel you expect to get from your suspension. Everybody and every rig is different though.

You can always make mockup shocks to bolt into place and then get the right measurements when it's all linked up to figure out what size shock you want to run. You will want to get the coils later after you have most of everything on the rig so you can get the sprung weight and calculate your spring rates properly.

Good info thanks a lot. I like the idea of the mockup shock, and that 14" to 16" of travel is better, that makes sense. I have never linked anything before so any information is good information. Once i get started on this and get most everything finished i will probably be back with some questions on spring rates. Thanks again. Any more info is good so keep it coming!

You can run the 10" stroke on a control arm with some heavier springs. By cycling the shocks on a radius arm, you can turn a 10" stroke into a 16" of travel.. 2.0s are wimpy for that application though.. 14" travel stroke is the magic number for running steering boxes and low CG setups..

I have a buddy running this setup on the rear of his ultra 4 rig and loves it... It took extra time to tune it in though as he fought with the dual spring rates and valving this entire season.

He is running 12 inch travel coilovers 11 inches ahead of the rear axle (mounted mid way up his lower control arm). This allows the rear axle to fully articulate with a shorter travel shock. I wish I had his pictures on hand to attach, but here's a quick write up from pirate.
