Collapsible jack stands

There doesn't appear to be anything on the market, and the hilift thread reminded me that this is on my list of things I want. I've thought up a couple designs but I don't know how well they'd work and I've never pursued it. Has anybody else given the idea any thought? Any solutions for a portable collapsible jack stand?

I like the idea of one that just collapses if you look at it wrong. My neighbor has one. It's the stock scissor jack that came with his wife's mercedes wagon. It collapsed on him while he was changing the brakes. Rotor crushed his arms. No broken bones, but he still has nerve damage 6 months later.

sounds like an instant Darwin Award there. :D

I understand the concept, but the liability is too high. I guess you could always use a 2x4 and a winch.

these pictures come to mind. :D

its a good idea but its scary even having a hydraulic floor jack, there good but they always recommend to put jack stands for safety, it will just be safer to carry around one jack stand and a hi-lift, its better to work under a car when its lock and stays locked then something that has pressure, you never know when it might fail due to pressure lost or oil leaks. im afraid at jack stands aswell..... thats why i bought the Hugh 12 ton jacks for safety...... they were pricey... but 90 bucks is better then a trip to the hospital or losing a limb or death :(

Kinda my point... I don't want to ever work under a rig with just a jack holding it up, rocks and deadfall are also problematic, and good jackstands are bulky.

so many ideas running through my head of something that could be bumper parts, un-bolt from bumper and bolt into jack stand config for trail repairs...

surprised no one has chimed in with an exhaust jack... I think I would rather be under a rig supported by a yoga ball than a hi-lift.

Exhaust jacks are awesome, and I'd trust one of those well before any other jack if I HAD to crawl under without jackstands.

I like the bumper parts idea. You've got me thinking about something that clamps to the hilift and to a 2" tube, so that the hilift can't shift...
