Comb Ridge

I'm trying to piece together a long weekend in March to explore this area. I drove the east side of the ridge a few years ago and saw a lot of informal campsites along the wash. Is this the only camping here? I also read the BLM is limiting vehicle camping to two nights only and hikers in the area have to apply for a permit. If anyone has been there recently and seen the BLM message boards is there any different regulations posted? I have found out the hard way that the BLM often posts regulation on the message boards and at their field offices and not always on the internet. I'm just trying to play by the rules.

Thanks for the help.

I would suggest calling the BLM field office in Monticello, they would have the most accurate and up-to date information.

That said, I want down the West side of Comb Wash last Fall and I did not see any dedicated camping sites. Sounds like a great trip! Are you going to spend all your time around Comb Wash or venture out beyond?

Check with the BLM as the recent RMP revision changed camping and permit stipulations along the Comb Wash corridor. That area is an extremely neat place to explore and could easily occupy a weeks time. Add Arch Canyon and the Hotel Rock areas to the north and you could really stick around.

If you are into history the are is deep with it, Everett Ruess, San Jaun Mission (Hole in the Rock Pioneers), Native Americans and early pioneer settlements to name a few. Plan a day to spend in Bluff at the south end.

Sidenote: I recently learned that Bluff was NOT the intended destination for the San Juan Mission pioneers. Of course after spending 6 months on what was to be a 6 week trip its easy to see why they were ready to stop at the first flat spot :D

Thanks for the email address. I was planning on doing this on a 4 day weekend. They took 24 hours of vacation away from us this year to balance the budget and I have to schedule adjust to get the 4 days off. It is about a 10 hour drive one way so I think by the time I hit both sides of the ridge and maybe snow flats or Montezuma I'll be out of time. I would probably make a big effort to get to Natural Bridges too.

I'll know more about the dates and such after this weekend. Thanks again for the help.
