Comcast sets bandwidth caps

I did 347 gigs last month...and that was a light month. I do every bit of my TV watching by downloading the episodes in 720p so I can do that every month to keep up with my TV watching while sitting around at work. Their propaganda is ridiculous when you consider the average HD episode is over a gig....and yes there are about 4TB of storage at my house between my brother in my basement and myself.

Instead of focusing on immediately upgrading their infrastructure to keep up with demand, they instead continue to gouge their customers and implement unfair bandwidth caps for those who use what they pay for. Great business plan!

Our internet was really slow this summer, so we called and complained.

Their answer:
"We're sorry, there are too many users on your street. Because you are so far from the hub, you should only have x amount of users in the area, but you have y amount, so the signal is really degraded by the time it gets to you."

So we asked the obvious question of what they were going to do to fix the problem.

Their response:
"We suggest you upgrade your service. You won't get the higher speed promised with your upgrade, but you should be at the speed you should be at how."

We asked them why they didn't boost our power, their response:
"For us to boost your power would require installing a new hub in your area. This is very expensive, and would increase your bill, so that isn't an option right now . . . How would you rate your service with Comcast?"

I HATE Comcast

So they over sold the limits on their hubs and refuse to upgrade them... and then they ask you to upgrade and pay more to get the speed that you SHOULD have for the regular cost. Wtf comcast?

Because they know there is nobody else that can provide what they pretend to provide. Qwest is a bunch of slow junk and Utopia is out of money...unfortunately Verizon FIOS will never come to Utah until Utopia goes out of business and get bought out by Verizon.

We had Verizon FIOS in Pittsburgh. I REALLY miss that internet plan.

Good GOD that is a lot of info to transmit!!! Maybe the internet providers need to put a meter on everyone like the power and gas companies do. Use as much as you like, just pony up for it at the end of the month. Problem solved?

I don't think that's the answer. What I think the answer is, is for the ISPs to quit over selling. If they want to sell you a 20mb/s line, then I should be able to use that 20mb/s line with no restrictions (bandwidth restrictions). If they can only support a 1.5mb line to each customer, then they shouldn't sell a 20mb line.

I'll echo what Caleb said. They are overselling and overbroadcasting their own content on a network that can't quite handle it. If they would spend a little more time and money into getting their network up to date to handle the demand (that customers are paying out the butt for) then people wouldn't be so offended.

If they don't get their act together, the moment a better option comes into the area a ton of people are going to switch over.

Yep, and it's also the reason they fight tooth and nail and spends gobs of money to keep options like Utopia out of here. It's just a matter of time until we get a decent FIOS solution in the valley that's not qwest or comcast.

I do have to agree with the overselling part. I mean I have a 7mb/s line through qwest but can only realize about 5 of that. Qwest says that's as good as it gets. I say call it a 5 mb/s line then, I mean at what point does it become fraudulent advertising?

ANCIENT THREAD REVIVAL...

Today I got notice that I have used more than my data allotment for the month. I hadn’t realized that Comcast was limiting data with the plan, but probably because I never thought I’d use it all. They allow 1.2 Terabytes per month without paying for more. That seems like plenty of data doesn’t it? I just can’t believe we’re using that much! we’re just a family of 3 and my daughter is only 9 so she doesn’t use a huge amount.

how much data do you guys use? Am I on par with most 3 person families?

Sorry any time this starts talking about bandwidth all the sudden I start wondering how much we actually use.

found this:
indicates 14G per hour for a 4k stream.
(some other sites say Netflix only uses 7G for a 4k stream so not sure who to believe here)

Let's say TV is running for 3 hours, 30 days a month this would equal 1260G if they used 14G/hour, then depending on how they measure bandwidth (is a TB = 1024G or just 1000G) they could also be actually claiming a number and giving less.

I'm just streaming at this point, I can't even use an antenna because of the area I'm in unless I just want to watch telemundo. Fortunately I'm not with Comcast.
