Commando questions

I am still thinking about a Commando- either eksjae's project or I located a running, drivable but stock 67 I will look at this week.

My questions are:
Any specific things I need to be looking for as potential trouble spots?
How good of off-road performance can I expect off a stock vehicle? It is said to have v-6, four speed with "heavy duty" (factory option) transfer case and rear end.

I am not real familar with the commando's, but have a soft spot for older vehicles, so any info or links would be appreciated.

Probably one of the first things you will want to do if you get a stock one is get rid of the steering set up. The old bell and crank style (if I remember the name correctly)

Like all older vehicles look at the body mounts.

Got some good input from a gentleman named Don who is planing next months Jeepster get together in Moab. Basically said buy it, redo the steering, replace rear axel etc etc. Seemed much more favorable about 70-71s as they have the 'upgrades' already.....anybody got one for sale?

just source the parts from a 70 or 71 and put them on a 67.

jeepsters are not that common and don't come up for sale very often.

you can plan on doing work to pretty much any jeepster you purchase. they are the most bastardized jeep ever built. there is no after market support(well practicly nreal support).

but they are great vehicle if you want something different and are willing to put the time in to make it what you need it to be.

I know where you can get a '67 thats built but its going to cost you :greg:

Can't you just get it for my birthday?

What price range are we talking? If nothing else, I can tell my wife what a built one costs and it might not make a project sound so bad. -_-

I'm not James but, I bet he wouldn't sell his for less than 10K. I'm olny doing a mild build up on mine and am into it about 3-5K and I'm doing all the work myself. This also include get alto of parts for fee or close to free. Keep in mind that I scored big time, I bought one the was sitting in a dudes garage for the last 15 years and is in very good condition. I also only paid $500.00 for it :p
