computer freaking out! Spyware guard 2008?

The Windows Security window you are getting is likely FAKE. AKA your downloading a whole new batch of crap each time that pops up. Same exact issue I was having (see my recent thread). Similar MO but a different virus name. It attacked my system restore files, my Windows files, drivers and constantly moved. Even downloaded itself onto my USB drive as I was attempting to recover all my data off the computer.

I tried 4 different products, PC Tools, McAfee, AVG and the Microsoft spyware deal. McAfee continually found it, but all it could do was to continue to quarantine needed driver and restore files. Ended up crashing the computer. Steve has it now for a wipe :-\

Hope yours is more easily resolved. Mine even attacked Firefox files. We uninstalled and re-installed Firefox and it immediately went for the throat again.

That is exactly what happened to me... McAffe gave me a name when it tried to quarantine it and I put that into google, and there were specific instructions on how to ax it...

Mine was a serious amount, like 100's of files it was quarantining

this is the same problem i had. www.malwarebytes.com found it and removed it. it is my new best friend. i still use avg, but i run malwarebytes every night aswell.

once they are quarantined, do I have to do anything else?

I had like 300 something....but I haven't ever scanned my computer for spam before. I suppose that is bad.

No, but when it happens over and over again, it is. I got to the point with Windows that I would zero out my drive once every six months. That was the only way that I felt good that I didn't have a virus problem. That gets annoying, you basically have to set aside an entire evening to blast away your drive, reinstall Windows and then reload all your software and data. When I got a Mac, I did it on a whim, turned out to be a good whim. I love that little iBook, three years old and I've never had a major system problem. The only time I've formated and reinstalled was when OS 10.5 came out a little over a year ago. Thats it! I use this thing heavily every day, tote it around with me and no problems. Rock solid.
After getting used to the Mac, I was so tired of dealing with my Windows desktop that I blew it away and now run openSUSE 10.3. Been rocking that for over a year now (waiting for 11.1 to upgrade). Never had a problem with that either. To me that says that Windows is an inferior OS when two of its competitors are vastly more stable and easier to use. But thats just from my experience.

I've quit using AVG, I now use Clamwin. Funny name, cheesy simple interface, but seems to work where AVG was blind. Plus I use Spyware Blaster, Adaware and a couple other tools too. Yet another reason that if I can get my laptop's wireless to work with Ubuntu, I'll probably never use Windows again.

Yep, I've said it several times before, AVG is s joke. Clamwin is one that I've suggested before. It works pretty good.

If you haven't already, check out Chrome. It's still missing a lot of the features Firefox has but it's got a ton of potential. I ran the first release for a little bit and like it however if I left it open for days it would suck up all my memory. I'm sure that's been fixed by now though.

I liked it, but for some reason after a couple days it started crashing on every website I visited. Even after removing it and reinstalling it would still do that

Clamwin is actually one of my favs to run also, I spend most of my time booted into Ubuntu (with the exception of playing WoW or Guild Wars)
