At some point my I was able to 'Remote' into my desktop from my laptop computer. At some point my laptop had some repairs done and I no longer have the 'Remote' feature or at least I don't know where it is. It was beyond helpful and needless to say I want it back :D

Can someone explain to me in plain english how I would set up my laptop to work as the remote once again? Both computers are run on the same network (Linksys router)

Thanks in advance!

Are these 2 different questions? Are you trying to remote to your desktop while both computers are on the same network? Or are you trying to access it while you are say, out of town? What OS is each one running?

Sorry, its been a long day. The laptop is working fine on the wireless. I just need to figure out how to use the laptop to remote into my desktop so I can be in the back shop and look at an invoice for example. They are in fact on the same network. It would be cool to be able to link in from the road at a later point but for now I just want to do it when I'm within range of the router that connects to both comps (desktop is hardwired to the wireless router and the laptop is wireless). Clear as mud?

Yes. The program you need to find is called Remote Desktop Connection. It should be easily found by searching in the start menu. It is included in windows 7, vista and XP. Then you will need to type in the IP address of the desktop and you should be in. If it doesn't work out have to make sure remote desktop access is allowed on the desktop. Make sense?

Start-run and type "mstsc" (sans quotes)
X2 but once it is up, make sure that you that you select the OPTIONS button and then select Save As and save the icon on your desktop of somewhere you know where it is.

Normally, the shortcut is under...Start..All Programs...Accessories and then you will see it there.

Bump for another dump questions...

Found how to do the remote on my laptop but its asking for me to enter the 'name' of the desktop to connect. WTF is the name of my desktop? :D

Right-click "Computer" on the desktop or in the start menu and select "Properties"
It should tell you right there.

Awesome, thanks Shane. I was trying 'Work Desktop' and it wanted WORKDESKTOP which was listed in that properties. I feel like a rocket scientist now

Since you work on multiple computers at your house, here's another cool thing you can do. Use a program called "SyncToy" (developed by M$) which you can setup synced folders between your laptop and desktop. After you setup which folders and such, you then use the windows scheduler to set when to sync the files.

For example, my parents have a laptop & desktop but usually only use one or the other... but wanted their photos and documents to be on both. So I setup the folders to sync over the network anytime the laptop is started and only when it's connected to their own wifi. It also doubles as a backup. If their desktop died, the laptop would still contain all the latest files since its last boot-up.

Just a cool trick to think about.
