We have a several year old Gateway laptop with Windows7 installed on it approx 3 months ago. As of last week or so the USB ports are extremely finicky over what they will accept. Our printer and Internet card are the two big ones that the USB ports are not recognizing. 2 of our ports are 2.0, and two others are 1.1; but regardless when one of the 2.0 ports chooses to work I get a message telling me that my device would be faster using a 2.0 port... WTH?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Jason - Check with gateway (website -> drivers) to see if there are any firmware updates or even new drivers for those usb ports.

Also, do a search on your laptop model and see if it's a common issue. You will likely find a resolution from somebody who had the same issue.
