Computer issues... again. RAM?

I roll with alot of windows and programs running... somtimes 3-4 different programs (Word, Excel, mapping) and then 10 or so Internet Explorer windows, each sometimes having 2 or 3 tabs each. From time to time my computer won't allow me to open anything else, like if I right click on a link, it won't even pop up the menu. If I close one of the tabs or windows, it will show the menu and allow me to open.

So it makes sense that there is a limit, but the problem is that it is random. Somtimes I can have a crap load open, othertimes a couple of programs and half dozen browser windows will freeze new openings.

Is there a RAM or memory setting I can adjust??

10 or so IE windows with tabs in each... wow, thats a MEMORY KILLER, each IE window ranges from 30-60mb of ram.. your probably loading up your swap file, and overloading your current ram, I think we put 1.5gb of ram in that computer, maybe need to adjust the swap file and add more ram.

Well my 10 year old computer has the following open:
2 FTP programs
4 HTML editting pages
8 Internet Explorer pages
6 folders
18 excel documents
Limewire
and 6 Word documents

All on 512mb RAM, its never failed to open things or given me a memory error. :D

This computer has 6 IE windows, 3 folders and 2 Word documents and it won't open another until I close one. Eventually I have to reboot the computer, then it will let me open as many as I want for a day or two, at which point it starts starving. I figured it was a setting or somthing???

IE 7 left running for long periods of time will develop a memory leak, well not exactly a memory leak but as you open and close tabs in a window it will forget to release the memory.

Stop using IE 7. Use firefox.

I was just going to suggest "Get Firefox"

I have usually got 3 or 4 windows with at least 3 tabs each, plus Corel going, and when I'm home something is usually getting downloaded...

no freezeups yet. :D

Try running perfmon, look at the paging of memory. also, take a look at your pagefile.sys look at memory % committed memory, it tells you the actual memory load.
assuming you're not haveing a HDD problem Maybe a fragmented page file (which is why linux uses a dedicated volume for swap space).

Kurt,
What kind of RAM is that POS... uh, PC running? Let me know and I'll see if I can snag some from work before we meet up tonight. Also, how many slots does it have and what is the max it can handle?
Oh, and ditch IE and get Firefox. And when the PC dies again, ditch that and buy a Mac! :D

All switched over to Firefox, had to remember all my forum and email passwords again :D. So far so good, I'll eventually load it up and see what it does. Thanks again everyone!

FF can still eat up huge amounts of memory, but you wont get the same problem (no windows opening and no pop up menus)

I have mine set to use Google as the search engine, so I can just type in stuff in the address bar. I don't like clutter.... in my windows anyway LOL
