so I was thinking about getting a new computer for my wife for her photography editing. she uses photoshop for editing an her current laptop is needing to be upgraded. Just wondering if there are any computers that you guys might recommend over the imac. I don't know much about computers an from what I have read, I should build my own for the best value but I don't know enough to do that. I don't care if its a all in one or desktop, anything is better than the current set up but i would like to get something that will work good for a while. Any tips on what to look for an what brands to go with are appreciated.

IMO, anyone that says to build your own for the best value is a retard. Generally, the only reason (that's worthwhile) to build is if you want very specific components in you machine. Usually for gaming or other high end computing needs. The iMac is a fantastic computer for what she would be doing with it. Upgrade it to 16-32Gb of memory and it'll do everything (and then some) she wants to do with it. If you really want it to be fast, get the SSD disk or atleast the Fusion disk.

That's what I always thought, I have friends that have built their own computers bit it was always for gaming. S the iMac really that much better than the others? I have seen others, like a hp, with same stats or very similar, but at a good amount cheaper. I guess you are probably paying some for the name also.

If you are in the market for apple or a laptop of any brand, I agree. But for a pc desktop you can't beat the prices of building your own system. It can be a pain and you don't get the fancy warrantee but the money you save is actually pretty good... that is if you can keep your eye on the normal parts instead of the enthusiast parts. :D

Caleb, you are just grumpy. :D

Depending on the type of led panel that comes in the imac, it could be an all around win. I'd guess you want higher grade panel for photography editing. They do use high quality parts so it's a lot of that and the name.

Being grumpy has nothing to do with it, nor does pc vs. mac :) If you don't value your time or the warranty, then sure, the upfront cost might save you a few bucks (It won't be much if you don't have any parts laying around you can re-use). I value my time and the ability to have it replaced without any stress (or any additional out-of-pocket money) to me should the need arise. Go in to most photography shops and they're lined with iMacs, I think that alone says if they are suitable for photo editing. :) At my previous company, we had a very high end photo lab that took higher resolution shots than any person on this board has taken (terabytes in size per file, it was actually very cool to see) and those guys all used iMacs or Mac Pros with the Cinema displays (same panels as the iMacs use).

I'm a Mac user, but I also believe in using the best tool for the job. For me that will never be Windows as I can do anything that can be done on a Windows based machine on my Mac. If your wife is not a Mac user and doesn't want to be, then it's a waste of time to consider an iMac as comparable PCs can do the job just as well. If you are looking for the cheapest upfront cost, I doubt it will be a Mac. Is a Mac worth more to me upfront than any pc, absolutely. Quality components, cosmetics, etc are all worth something to me.

I have a mac pro and love it, she hasn't had a mac but she really wants a imac for her photography, I was just wondering mainly wondering if they really are worth the extra money for it. I assumed they were, but the only person I know who knows a decent amount about computers is a apple freak and only says to buy apple, he also has stocks in apple so that doesn't help. If its really worth it I have no problem spending the extra money on a good computer that will last a while and be a much better set up.
