Just a bit of info regarding Coyote Canyon... We GPS'd the trail this morning. It appears to be entirely on BLM land (not SITLA or private). It is just west of the 160 acre parcel owned by Kylie Miller.

Per the BLM, this area is designated "open", however they admitted to me to posting the "this is not a trail" sign at the entrance (exit?) to Coyote during EJS. We will be having a discussion with them as to exactly what their definition of "open" is!

So it was a BLM sign? That's strange. I would like to hear more info about this.

Thanks Jeff!

Thanks a bunch for taking the time to get involved with this. I am glad that it is on BLM land. I presume it is ok to wheel this trail then eh?

I don't see how the BLM can stop someone from driving it, since it is designated "open", but that obviously didn't stop them from trying. There were no "closed" signs there this morning, although there were a couple of recently-posted signs marking the boundary between SITLA and BLM land.

I will try to get some kind of official word on this, but in the meantime, I personally would not hesitate to drive it.

like who?

Like the buyers of the property for one. Do you really think they were actually stupid enough to buy it without knowing exactly where the property boundaries were? There are markers placed at the corners of every section of public land all over the werstern US. Anyone with even the most basic skills at using a compass & map can find them and extrapolate where the property line is.

The BLM is another entity that most likely knew exactly where the property boundary is. Not necessarily the field personnel but someone at the BLM most likely was aware of it. One of my good friends is the GIS specialist with them in the Moab office. Through him I know for certian that they have used the same GPS equipment the military uses (the stuff that is accurate to within a few inches) to confirm all of their boundaries. The fact that there are now markers showing the boundary tells me that this was all confirmed a long time ago. Things like that are a bureaucratic hassle for them to get placed, so the surveying for it had to have been done a while back for it to percolate through the bureaucracy. There likely was also a lot of political maneuvering going on with it. You have to remember that there are some people in positions of power within the various governmental agencies that have their own agendas that are contrary to what those of us who frequent this site have as our agenda.

San Juan County most likely knew exactly where the boundary is too. Again not necessarily the people in the field, but you can be sure that their surveyors & several others in various departments were aware of the exact property boundary, after all they just got another 160 acres in private ownership that they can now collect taxes on and that will likely demand certian services from them at various times. You can bet that the SJ Sheriff is going to make sure exactly where the property line is now if they didn't already know it.
