Creating GPS Routes

I've been using a GPS to help with my 4x4 and dual sport trips for quite some time. Recently I've wanted to get more familiar with creating routes and uploading them to my GPS, so I can follow them when in unfamiliar places and get the measurable information like total mileage, elevation, etc.

I came across RideWithGPS.com and like how easy it is to use. RideWithGPS.com is geared more towards cyclists/runners/hikers, but supports motorized travel just fine. There are many other similar sites/programs, but this one is free (if you choose the Free version), you don't have to download anything and it's plenty capable. You do need to register a profile, but with doing so you can save & share your routes with friends. I like how you can search routes created by others and if you see something interesting, you can download it! You can also upload your routes that you've already ridden with your GPS and share the trips you've made.

I mapped out a route that I want to ride this weekend on the dual sport here... http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2639115

It took me about 15 minutes to put it together, save it and then upload it to my GPS. It's setup to provide turn by turn directions, along with a mileage counter at each turn. So far I've found it to be super simple, easy to share and fun to create routes for future trips.

Of course, nothing beats a paper map when the GPS doesn't work as planned. :D

cool, I'll have to check that out. I'm getting better at doing this in google earth, but it's still not nearly as quick as I'd like. 15 min sounds fantastic.

Thanks for sharing Greg, I've been trying to do this with base camp, but it takes some time
