Just lost the auto in my 04 CTD a few day's ago.Lost 2nd gear(slipping bad) and seem's to have a hard time getting into OD at time's.Has had a very slight shudder(almost unnoticeable) between 1st and second since I bought it last year...thought it may be just how it run but I guess not:(

Researching over the net to see who has the best tranny's.Been reading good comment's about goerend and am seeing if anyone here has any feedback. Not looking for a stock replacement since mine went south at 90,000 but want a trans that is built and will last a long long time.

Thank's!

Heard lots of good things about the suncoasts, but they are expensive. I had mine rebuilt by a local trans shop. Upgraded to billet shafts and a triple clutch converter. It lasted almost 30,000 before the converter wouldn't lock anymore. They warrentied it and rebuilt the trans, but it cost me to have the converter rebuilt.. My next one will be a suncoast.
Just my .02

Or if you can afford it, they make a allison swap.

With the upgrades and the triple clutch t/c I was about 4000. I did get a little discount though, the place I work at does a bit of work with this place so they cut me a little deal. They said it was good to about 800 hp.

I had to replace the one behind my 7.3 last year. I was looking through one of the diesel mags and found Ultimate Trans in Boise. They are building a lot of those dodge trannys to run behind built d-max. Been very happy with mine. Talk to Dave. Price was very good.

Do a little research before you drop it off at a transmission shop of any kind. I was quoted $2k - $4k and anywhere between to "rebuild" or get a new transmission. They were all sure it needed a rebuild. A little searching around on the internet and it turns out the only thing wrong with it were 2 stuck solenoids which put me out about $60 and some change. I even changed the the other solenoid while I was in there. IIRC, it was about a 2 hour fix.

That was about 190k miles. I'm running about 225k+ now on the original transmission. Just food for thought.

I agree with Herzog. Stuck solonoids are common in these trans. When mine went, I was manually changing gears and first was gone. Come to find out the T/C was shot and the forward band was hosed. Second time it went bad, the valve body they put in was faulty and it was engaging the forward clutches in park and neutral, so it just wore on itself. But I would suggest getting it looked at. I had mine done @ J&G trans. They do alot of them. James is the guy to talk to.

I've thought of things like this as well..how was your trans acting and how did you go about finding the problem?

I'm aware of the "it needs to be rebuilt by mechanics" as they want the money and alot dont care,I wont deal with any in my area just for that reason.

Bummer Mike, I hope the solenoids are the only thing wrong. I had the Scout automatic (Mopar A727) rebuilt by Action Transmission in Provo. One of the owners lives in Mt. Pleasant, where Chad Taylor and I pulled the transmission. We just took it down the street a few blocks and dropped it off at his house and he took it from there. It has worked great since.

Been reading on pirate and came across a thread about dirty terminals at the battery and connections at the trans.Checked the wiring and connections..looked fine, battery needed cleaned bad, corrosion from hell then took for a spin.Hooked up solid in every gear and hit OD everytime,a few stop and goes later it starts acting up in second every other time or so but engages when lifting off the throttle:confused: starting to lean towards a sticking silenoid or some kind of pressure related part.

Going surfing again

My symptoms were (if I can remember, it's been about 6 years since) no overdrive and no first gear. It only took a little searching to find out which solenoids would cause that.

Yours sounds kind of like a solenoid issue but not exactly like mine... which is why I brought it up just as an FYI. Good luck! Stupid magical slush boxes. :D

Now that is interesting! Keep us updated.

Checked the odometer while taking a spin-94135 miles.Fluid is alittle dark but still transparent and smells like tranny fluid, not burnt...Who knows how it was treated the 86000 miles before I aquired it though.Had been well taken care of and a Very clean truck, with no mod's other than upgraded exhaust, cold air intake and exterior upgrades. No gooseneck hitch, programmer etc which is what I wanted as I was leary of buying a modded truck esp with an auto...

I have heard nothing but good about suncoast as well, if your pocket book is well padded....

I noticed that you are in Wy, I know of a great shop in Sandy that will take care of you. Let me know if you are interested.
