I finally aquired everything to try and fix the auto in my 04 CTD.Pulled the pan last night and put a new Borg warner solinoid along with a new sensor in then cleaned the pan.Found a lot of crap stuck to the magnet which looked like silver putty but found no big chunks of shavings or metal and even running the silver crap between my fingers nothing was noticable so I figure its just wear and tear that the magnet picked up.Anyways, put it all back together with fresh fluid and went for a spin...Fixed the shuttle problem but found it would'nt hit second gear, just slip unless I lifted off the throttle to hit 3rd.

Went back out this morning, added some additive and tightened the band and went for another ride....Work great now,no shuttle shifting with no slipping in second anymore.Even from a dead stop to full throttle she just buzzes through the gears without missing a beat with not slipping at all, just super firm shifts better than when I first bought it.

I am glad you were able to fix it and I am sure there will be more than one person who will be grateful that you posted up your fix. It seems like it does not happen nearly enough where someone is able to fix an auto tranny. Good job!

Great to hear!

It makes me really wonder how many people have put out thousands of dollars when the fix might have just been some solenoids. :(

Found alot of the info through some of the diesel forums,Pirate also had some but takes alot of weeding through the haters and BS.From my readings damn near everyone showed the same symptoms and quite a few have taken them to shops and dealers where they said the trans was shot and needed replaced...I thought it was worth a shot to spend $200 in parts and tranny fluid.

Alot had to do with adjusting the bands though and mine were way loose and out of spec....Maybe a 5min job and helped a ton.

That's exactly what happened to me. I took it to 2 different transmission shops and both claimed it was shot. I didn't have the money to fix it right away so instead I started researching and reading. I figured "eh, I'll give it a shot to replace the solenoids and maybe learn something". Turns out it solved my problem completely. :D

I didn't have to do my bands at the time as I adjusted them about 2 months before the transmission went out. Speaking of which though, it's been long enough I should probably do that again.

FWIW - I'm now 236K with original transmission. But I'm not performance chipped or anything like that either.
