I picked up a Juice with Attitude and a 4" Stainless AFE exhaust from Wayne and I decided to do a before and after (exhaust) EGT test with a load up a hill.

Here's the new and old exhaust

exhaust 1.jpg exhaust 2.jpg

It came with a Magnaflow muffler, the bends were very well done and the hangers worked well but the flairs on the two straight pieces were not flairy enough  I was disappointed with the sound of the exhaust until I made a tight right turn while accelerating.... looks like I'll be needing a turn down :D

Anyway

Test 1 Stock exhaust
Railroad hill (big climb on SR 73 bound for 5mp)
7,980lbs in tow
Juice on 0 (stock)
Tranny locked in 3rd
Speed 57mph
EGT 1134~1164

Test 2 4" Stainless
Railroad hill (big climb on SR 73 bound for 5mp)
7,980lbs in tow
Juice on 0 (stock)
Tranny locked in 3rd
Speed 57mph
EGT 957~1084 Most of the time it was around 1060 but would drop off fast on the few short less hilly parts.

I'll vouch for close to the same results. Lower EGT's with fast drop off. Very cool! Thanks for the hard data.

When I was a kid, my grand-dad had an old Peterbuilt. Hauled around 30 ton back-hoes etc with it. It had two gear boxes – don’t remember, like 4x5 for 20 gears or so. Anyway, he would shift gears based on stack temperatures (verses rpm)

Hope that clears it all up

Just and observation re: my PowerJoke: (hey, it's actually applicable to this conversation)

The state made me put a muffler on it. I KNOW my EGTs went up and I think I dropped a little pulling power as well. I didn't document it quite as well, and the trips were spaced a out between a couple of months, but same load, on the similar trailers.

I've been kind of looking for a muffler to 'gut' like a cat, but don't know if that would help or not. (thus passing the visual part of the inspection which is all that's required with the turbo)

Mine has a muffler, it's a straight through muffler. Basically a 4" stainless tube that has been cheese grater'd and then had a 7" tube wrapped around that.
Also, there are no diesel emissions in Utah County :p

Hmmm, maybe I'll have to see what Wayne can get one for the PS Ford. I've been wanting a 4" exhaust.
