Cummins part from under the dash

My son in law has a 2006 Dodge Cummins. While he was driving it this part in the picture fell out from under the dash on the drivers side. When he turned it off, it wouldn't start again. It acts like the battery is dead but it isn't.

Who hop knows what this is and where it goes

I owned 3 Dodge diesels and the last one was the biggest pile of $hit I've ever had the displeasure of owning, almost everything that could go wrong, did.... except.... that thing... whatever it is.

I didn't have that go wrong with my '04. (one of the few things that did stay together in that truck) Curious to find out what it is

I'd guess solenoid; Coil wrapped around a metal plunger of some sort.
Does the starter circuit have multiple solenoids due to the higher amp draw for a diesel starter?
