I would pick the JK anyday over the other ones listed.
I voted JK due mostly to Jeep loyalty. However, if you want to tow a popup or a boat, the JK is lame on power. Very lame on power. Are you listening Mr Jeep engineer... lame on power! I pray for forgiveness, to watch over my family and for a V-8 or diesel in the Unlimited. Did I say it needs more power already?

I have driven the JK and the FJ, and for a DD the FJ would win hands down. Keep in mind that tire size will be kept below a 33". I realize that the JK is a much more work-able platform for modifications, but I am more interested in a mild lift and tires, and being comfortable driving everyday.

Camping...does that mean towing or hauling gear? In that case, I would think the H3 Alpha (V8) would be the winner. Can't see either of the others doing as well in that regard.
You can get them with a rear e-locker as well.
Of course, the best solution.....buy my Montero Sport! Makes a nice dd, off roads well and is fair at towing (not speedy, but I have used it for gear loads of 3k or so to places like Lake Powell).

If you already have your mind made up, why the poll? The H3s and nice riding vehicles, with more power than the other two. I'd still vote for the JK, and I've been in all three.

I voted JK. Come on the top comes off. 3" lift and you can fit 35's.

I voted for the FJC they are starting to grow on me... Although you need to take into consideration that they only have 2 doors and then suicide doors... If you have kids jumping in and out it would get annoying really fast. The JK would be my next on your list especialy with the 4 doors... But I think over all I would consider a 4-Runner...
Reliable and comfortable with some definate capabilities to get to a campsite especially if you are not looking for anything extreme...

Well, the JK is a distant option in my mind,, I have not decided yet for sure. I am a little worried about the depriciation the H3 and JK will suffer vs. the FJ
As far as camping, I would not be towing, just tenting it out of the rig. I think that my biggest complaint after driving the JK was the lack of power, especially since I had just come from driving an FJ. The JK would be an awesome offroad vehicle, and that is why I am considering it, but the downfalls on the street may sway me towards one of the others.

4 Runner crossed my mind as well, the reason I didnt really consider it was that the other three i listed have at least 1 locker from the factory.

I agree, the JK is a bit anemic. My problem with the FJ is the doors. One, the 2 door, with the suicide for the rear, and two, I hear if you use them off road much, those doors will start to make a lot of noise.

from what I have heard, I doubt the 5cyl H3 will impress on power any better than the JK.

I thought about the Alpha as well, but its a bit out of my price range
I wasn't very impressed with the 5 cyl. H3..... About as anemic as the 3.8L JK. I'd take the JK, but you probably already knew that. It's lacking alot of the gadgets and gizmos and I like that. Simple is good. Esp. when you're dropping some serious $$,$$$.$$ for a rig.
We'll be purchasing an Unlimited JK when they get a decent motor.

Just my 2 cents, the H3 has the most CRAMPED interior I've ever been in. It's uncomfortable for the 6' crowd

I wonder if they'll start looking less "cartoonish" anytime in the future? I really thought the older ones looked pretty nice, but haven't liked them for about 5-6 years now.

Good info on the H3, I have yet to drive one, but I had heard that there were underpowered.
As far as the gadgets and trinkets on the JK, the one I drove had keyless entry, power windows, sat radio, remote start, traction control,, ect... seems like they are loosing their bare bones appeal... It was nice to have the remote start though
