Damn dial-up

So what are my options?

I'm in woods cross and qwest says no DSL at my place. I have satellite TV and don't want to pay comcast price for web because I'm cheap!

I have a free dialup account for home use through work, but it's dialup, luckily I do get 48K  Needless to say I don't use the web at home much.

I just set up DSL for my parents in Sandy over the weekend and now I'm jealous.

I haven't been able to play any of the new PC games or even XBOX live stuff. The PC games I used to play, now I lag so bad comparatively that people drop me.

I'm thinking of sitting on the side of the road with a sign "stranded with no broadband. Please help" maybe some suckers will help me!

On top of that I'm getting by with my 10 year old pentium II 350mhz cpu, since I don't see any reason to upgrade until I have broadband.

So is there anything I'm missing?

I like the price of Qwest, but it isn't in my area. I know with comcast, with their promo price it will just be enough for me to love it then the price will go way up. Satellite web is just too much $$.

call earthlink. they provide DSL over qwest facilities, if they start playing ball Qwest will.

Where are you exactly, there may be a wireless provider in the area.

Just checked, Earthlink proudly offers satellite for $99/month.

What are some of the wireless providers that I can check. I live near 2600 south and redwood.

I've got Comcast but can get DSL too. You're really not that far from me, but I'd assume I'm serviced out of a different area than you are. IMHO, you'd be happy with EITHER compared to what you have. If your area doesn't have options, I would have a group of citizens (I'm sure there's some neighbors with similar issues--I'm not a satellite TV fan due to the number of sets in our house) petition the city to get an answer from Qwest re: DSL.

I wonder if you could get the 'cheapie' Comcast service and keep the promo price longer? My Qwest phone service is $45 lately and I'm not sure what happened to make dial tone worth that much. I'm thinking of going to voice elsewhere. Maybe that's another avenue for you to explore?

Qwest sucks more than Comcast. Seeing that Qwest is $45 for phone service, I believe it sucks more!

Vonage $19 a month. Chances are you can get Comcast and Vonage for less than Qwest phone and DSL and be happier

I'm seriously considering Comcast voice/internet/cable for $100 per month. Basically that's saving me the cost of the Qwest bill.

Something to think about? (probably depends on how committed to satellite TV you are?) I wonder if Comcast would do just the internet/phone if you kept your satellite?

Comcast's site says no voice service at my address yet, so no bundle for me.

The vonage thing might work out, but comcast is still spendy.

Their site says $54 for the starter digital cable package(no web included) I only pay $42 for Dish and DVR.

Qwest calls all the time wanting to sell me DSL. I say great hook it up. Then they say Oh sorry not in your area. The only thing worse than a telemarketer is one that teases you with something you do want.

I guess I resign myself to dialup

I know here they were very pissy when they found out I had satellite and intended on using it after the move! Satellite sure has taken the $'s out of the pigs sails!!

If someone is committed to the NFL ticket, what can they say? (not that I am, but some people think that's the coolest)

What can they say anyway!? I love paying less than a 1/3 to Dish Network than I would to Comcost (heh) and get better support, more channels, etc.

That's me! It's well worth the $200/season. Also, the carrier has NFL Network which is freaking awesome! I'll stick with Qwest/Dish just for that reason alone, but the combo is overpriced when you're doing Internet/phone/tv all together.

what do you guys know about bluezone?

I started wondering why all my neighbors have a ball shaped antenna on their roofs and in another post rockmonkey enlightened me.

I'm very satisfied with Comcast's service and uptime, I just don't like the price.

I've had Comcast since I moved up here - no Qwest DSL available at my house, but the neighbors have it? Go figure...

It's definately better than it was 10 years ago when I had it before... The cost is pretty high though... I think I'm paying about $60 a month.

Oh, and I'm VERY commited to satellite for my TV. I'll never go back to cable! I've been with Dishnetwork for over 10 years and haven't looked back once!

When I got married the first time, my wife was committed to cable. Needless to say, it was gone... At the time, Dish didn't have the local channels on the same numbers as the Cable did but now they do. ie you couldn't punch in 3 for channel 3 and have it go there. You had to remember it was 156 or something...

When I moved up here, Dish changed my HD receiver to Spokane locals, but I'm still getting SLC locals on the bedroom DVR :D I also can't change the time, so it's an hour ahead always.

if you want you can tell comcast that you only want their high speed internet and nothing else... and guess what... they can't seperate it so you get both... but you have to insist that you only want the internet...

or you can do what I did when I moved into our new house.... hook a high gain antenna on the roof with a rotor and move it around and find a neighbor that has a wireless router that isn't secure and play scumbag and get internet for free off of them... after all its not illegal just immoral... this works great if you live in an apartment complex... cause there is always someone out there that doesn't secure up their router...

Yes they can, it's easily done they just put in a filter.... it's easily undone too, you just take out a filter BUT that is very illegal. You would only get basic cable that way as well.
