I'm thinking of welding my 35 for a SHORT while. Now I am fully aware this is one of the worst idea a man can concieve doing to a weak a$$ axle but I have no cash so It'll have to work but I guess my question is should it look like this??

i dont think it needs to be that much but it would work, it looks like the whole space in the carrier is filled with weld

Really, wow. Redneck tech at its finest.

Honestly, it doesn't take that much. My dad just ran a few good beads right in the corners of where the spiders contact on all the ones he's welded and they have all held up.

I'll take your carrier home with me on monday and have him weld it if you want.

Search for Lincoln Locker over on the Pirate. There was a guy there that made a giant ball of weld, it was quite funny.

doesnt matter how well you weld it, the axle shaft will break before the weld lets go...I wouldnt even bother putting a locker in another d35 its just a waste of time, its going to end badly.

Thats the point of welding the one he has.

Not enough money to buy and build D44's or 1 tons. Instead of buying a locker, weld what he has, wheel it tell it breaks, then its easier to justify buying new axles.

He's fully aware of the extremely bad idea of running a welded D35. (especially with the 36's)

I wouldn't weld to the cast carrier unless you plan on dropping it into a bucket of sand right after to cool then cleaning all that sand out before you run it.

Just weld the spiders and fill the voids in good. Make sure you get all the oil out with a good cleaner/degreaser or your gonna have really crappy welds.

I have a locked d35 and it works just fine. Granted I'm only running 29" tires this is about as rough as I'll get my XJ.

It has a lot to do with how it's driven too!!!

its true a D35 will break easy but i think he's right if you use little throttle and are very carful i think he can keep it together............maybe

I have no doubt a d35 will break easily. Big tires, lockers, and beat the hell out of it, it'll break in a heart beat. I'm getting more sedate as I get older. My little XJ is locked front and rear, stock axles, stock gears, and I am not a high rpm wheeler. Never have been. Like I said before, it's deceivingly capable!!!

Dana 35 axles hold up suprisingly well on 33s if you don't hop the jeep or go crazy on underhung ledges. It's all about driving finess, any abprut stop in wheel rotation is going to break stuff.
Just weld your axle, if/when it breaks who cares, just put your spare in and move on with life.

d35 dont just break, they spin tubes, bend tubes, break axles, if you bend a tube the shaft will bind inside the carrier, I agree that with finesse you can make them last a while, that said dana 30's seem to take more abuse for there size, I would lock the front and leave the rear open until you can afford to build something else, but your not out anything if you weld and ruin a d35 so proceed.
