Ok guys I got a question for you does anyone know of a way to tell a dodge dana 44 from a chevy dana 44. I have a 77 ramcharger and the front axle is a dana 44. I have read that some people put chevy 44s on these dodges. On th diff it says 445cf I looked for the bom number but I couldnt find it. I am mainly wondering what the weak points of my axles are and what I can do to make them stronger or if I should just look for a better axle. Thanks Zack

44's are 44's are 44's. Yes, there are variations in axleshaft length (headed you off at the pass, perverts! HA!), WMS, that kind of thing, but they are basically the same relative strength (yes, I am not counting unused oddballs like closed knuckle drum brake 44's out of 1948 Fords or something).

Cromo shafts and good joints will keep them alive longer under a fullsize rig if you're really wheeling the whizz out of it, but will still break, and will cost you nearly as much as a 60 anyway, and upgrades to a 60 are UPGRADES, not "WASTED MONEY". :D

If you're not beating the crap out of it, and aren't running >36" treads, I wouldn't even worry about it.

I don't like Dodge's fulltime 44's, they have weird hubs and they bother me. :D

Well I already have 36.5 inch tires under it plus they are h1 wheels and those things seem pretty damn heavy to me. I was hoping I could build my 44 up since its already got a arb in it oh well. Im also hoping to move up to 39 or 40 inch tires so I guess I need to start looking for a new axle. I kinda have a heavy foot to so between that and the 440 the 44 probably wont last long. Im going to moab for labor day weekend so I guess I better be carefull til I can upgrade.
