Dana 60 vs Toyota P/U Axle Shafts

I pulled my Dana 60 apart tonight to check the spline count & held it against one of my Birfs, to compare dimensions.... Talk about a surprise!!

I knew they were about the same, Carl is always talking about how comparable Toy's are to Dana 60, but it was nice to hold the 2 in hand and see the similatities.

The Dana Shaft (30 Spline) is on the Left & the Toyota is on the right. I don't have a Mic, so the best you get is a tape measure. The 60 shaft is slightly larger than the Toy shaft, but not by much!

If you could just get rid of that bell on the end....

That one there is a SuperBirf.... Just make the material less brittle and strenghten the outtermost edge and there's no need to get rid of anything.

Although, it would be cool to be able to run Alloy 60 Shafts, CTM's and Dana knuckles and keep the Toy Housing. But.... why bother?

I'll stick with the SuperBirfs and take my chances of breakage every great once in awhile. Anywho, the rear axle has no problems!

That is not a fair comparison. I'll pull one of my 60 shafts out and you can compare.
I'll second that one. Those are fake 60 shafts... Real 60 shafts have 35 splines and will blow away that Toyota one for strength.

I agree also, There is no comparison in strength between a Superbirf and a 60 knuckle. The 30 spline shaft size isn’t much different obviously, but the knuckle design is much stronger on the 60. (But on the other hand, the Superbirf is a MAJOR upgrade for a Toy axle)

I was suprised by the size of them when I first saw a set too. IMO - a 60 isn't worth running unless you have the 35 spline. :(

Kinda makes up for it though cause they're full float. No side bind pressure... but still. :ugh:

marlincrawlers websight had a writeup a wile back about the puting 60 knuckles onto a toy housing. they used stock 30 spline 60 outers with all the stock toy breaks bearings an hubs, so they must be the same size. for inners they used stock 60 inners turned down and splined to fit the toy carriers. sounded like a pritty slick setup. i've been contemplating trying to build one for my toy. just some worthless in for to get the wheels rolling.

That would actually be pretty cool, if it could be done affordably.
