I have 4:10 gears right now and I want 4:56, will I have to get a new carrier? where is the cut off?

4:10 is the split. So yeah, you need a new carrier.

You can get 4.56 thick gears. The ring gear is thicker to compensate for the 4.10 carrier. They are cheaper than replacing the gears and carrier and sometimes are cheaper than the standard set of gears.
