The 60 From Hell(tm) Needs the R/P cleaned out, seems someone sandblasted said axle before putting it in storage. :mad2: :mad2:

anyway, can I take the diff out without messing up preload and whatnot??? Would be a LOT easier to get all the junk out.

It kinda sounds like your axle spend time at the bottom of some body of salty water before it got salvaged.

I have strong suspicion that this was a sh*tty NY axle, on a plow truck or something. It's bad.

but can I remove the diff or what?

Take it apart. It will go back together exactly the same.

Yup, everything is adjusted by shims under the bearings, so unless you press a bearing off you really can't screw it up. (now watch, you'll prove to be more talented at screwing things up than I give you credit for.....)

As long as you have the pinion out to clean the bearings, might as well throw in a new pinion seal.

Carl, thanks for the kind words..... F****R!!!!! :)

I'm really interested to see what breaks: my money's on one of the bearing caps.

I would also do all new bearings, too... I mean, you are in it that far already...But apparently Carl knows your abilities better than I do, so you better just put the cover back on, and hose it with your garden hose. ;)

BTW my dad almost has that injection system done...All that is left is to put it on a donor motor and light a fire.

If anything other than the differential coming out with a good tug after I pop the caps off happens, I'm going to shoot my neighbors. HAHAHAH

Make sure you post some pics up when yer dad gets it done.

A trick I've used in the past for swapping bearings, if you know it was already set up right, take a punch and make a small deep punch in the carrier on both sides as close to the bearing as you can, before you cut the bearings off. then when you put the new ones on press them on to the same place. usually it'll be close enough that you can swap a shim or two from side to side and have it fit, same thing on the pinion side.

Maybe you should consider hot tanking that thing. at least then you know you got it all.

I think it'll be ok... I'm going to pull the diff, and leave everything alone. In the summer I"ll be putting in all new bearings and an ARB, so this is just like, clean it up to run for a little bit.

I'm considering cutting it in half and burying the pieces deep within a mine shaft LOL so no one else is tainted by its evil.

Why don't you just leave it bare until then since you surely won't be driving on it for at least another year.
