My friend is looking for a daily driver/crawler. What are the pros and cons. ie. why would u chose this vehicle. He is leaning more towards a cherokee, what are the pros and cons of this?

Great DD, but stop at 33" tires.....the unibody will appreciate it. I'd describe it as more of a daily driver/wheeler than a daily driver/crawler.

Pros: Cheap platform with a lot of aftermarket choices, 4.0L engine, AW4, upgrade paths are known and established---Excellent wheelbase, very streetable, A/C

Cons: Unibody, D35 axles:rolleyes: , ABS brakes, Unibody, they don't roll well, lots of glass, steering system, wheelwells, unibody, ..

I voted for the wrangler, but If I had two votes, I would have also voted for the pickup. Full frame.

With the full frame, you can take the vehicle further in the long run than the unibody (maybe I'm wrong, maybe that year 4 runner is full frame as well.....this being the case, change my vote to that year 4 runner).

The way I see it, once you get the vehicle paid off, perhaps you can then buy another dd (like greg with his toyota car) and change the orientation of the rig from DD/wheeler to Crawler/[DD when needed].

definitley the 4runner. buy and '85 and get EFI with a solid axle. it has a removable top, a back seat, a full frame (not unibody), and everything else you would ever want! looks way cooler than a jeep too!!:D

Well, actually that is what I have wanted him to get, and I wish I knew about 85's when I was searching, and I would have to sell my toy I have right now before I could get one. But like I said he wants the cherokee and I don't have really useful arguments to stear him away.

I am going to say something that is not on the poll list, and hear me out.

Get an early 90's Range Rover. (Yeah I know, I thought that I would be the LAST person to say something good about Rovers!)

Heres why: 1. V-8, not a big one just a 4.0 but they are reliable and put out torque at low RPM's
2. Solid axles with coils, the rear uses a Triangulated upper link so there is no track bars.
3. Decent low-range ratio, not sure exactly but when you put them in low they crawl pretty decent.
4. Non-unibody for more structrual(?) strength.
5. Great wheelbase, around 100" (not the LWB country though)
6. Pretty much anything from the aftermarket that you can get for anything else
7. Most of the ones that I have seen were owned by older couples that didn't wheel them and most have low miles, around 60-70K
8. You can get a decent one for around 10K

Just my .02
