Joan and I are going to Death Valley again this year. We will be there from Febuary 11th to the 16th. All friends and family are invited to join us and just have a good time. I will lead and suggest trips around the park for anyone interested. We will be staying at Sunset Campground with our 5th wheel and Ram 2500 where the fees are $12 or $6 for old folks.

There are hotels and motels in Furnace Creek and Stovepipe Wells but cost anywhere from $80 to $1600 per day. Both of these areas also have campgrounds that are more reasonable but it is all dry camping except at Stovepipe Wells. http://www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/camping.htm

I have not received any response so I am meeting two of my boys there and we will just play around as the spirit moves us. Will furnish info if anyone shows up.

i wish i had teh time to go :( :(

I've stayed at Stove Pipe each time I've gone and liked it. Once in the motel, other times in the RV park. Pretty good considering where you are ;)

About $80 at the Stovepipe Wells motel is good compared to $1200 to $1600 at the Furnace Creek Inn. The best bet in the area is camping or RV of course. We have gone just about every year since 1966 and still find plenty to do.

..The nice thing about staying at Stove Pipe, you get access to the pool - regardless if you stay at the hotel or RV park.... :D There is also a gas station, store and restaurant right there.

but THE best thing!! If a sand storm comes ripping through, you will be dead nuts in it at Furnace Creek!! Same with flooding rains! Up at Stove Pipe, there will barely be any wind and you can watch the sand storm. Pretty cool!

True, True!!!

We are back home. Death Valley was good and we had a good time with the kids. BUT!! It rained and snowed two days before we got there and Goler was gated at the West Side Road and the Race Track Road was closed and Saline Valley was closed at both ends by 4 feet of snow and Titus Canyon was closed. Met a guy from Utah that had come up from the Amargosa side through Echo Canyon that said his 4runner or cruiser built by Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters made it up the waterfall after a little struggle. Echo was the only canyon open. We walked more than we rode. I am glad no one from Utah showed up as it would have been very sad.

Bummer to hear so much was closed Jack. We were down there the first weekend of February and ran into much of the same weather. We ended up finding some great adventure in the north end of the park. Scotty's Castle up to Crankshaft, passed the mine and over to Eureka Dune, over Steel Pass to the Saline Springs and over Lipencott to the Racetrack.

Interesting you ran into a customer of mine, Brendan his name by chance?

Brendan or Bradon, with my ears it was something like that, a white vehicle. He impressed me as a loner.
Do you think a full sized pickup or suburban could get thru the slot at Steel Pass? How was Lippincott Road? We used to have a devil of a time getting across the washes in the alluvial plain. We always stayed at the upper hot spring because the hippies and the Manson Family were at the lower spring.

Pickup/Burb on Steel Pass, yes... careful driving, yes. We had a 4Runner, my Tacoma and an FJ62, for the most part it was easy driving up and over, slowing only at the short technical sections.

Lippincott is about the same, if your un-nerved by narrow trails it could get the best of you.
