I have not seen the Dell in person, but I would concider one. They are kind of an answer to the Asus eeepc that came out awhile ago. you may want to concider one of those as well. Users say the biggest limit is the screen size, so Asus has gone up to a 10" screen on theirs now. Other than that they would be great for a travel computer, to check email, watch movies, internet access, minor work, etc.

IMHO...I would steer clear of Dell if possible. We have had nothing but problems with dell hardware since I started in the computer business in the late 80's even though we purchased 4 of there high end servers this year and guess what (they still suck) and you would think that I would know better by now. I have bought, repaired and returned just about every model they make, desktop and laptop. Some of the higher end XPS models are ok but you will pay more than you need to. Also, stay clear of HP/Compaq as well.

I do recommend Acer, Asus and Toshiba laptops. We have been selling Acer laptops for at least 4 or 5 years now and have never returned one for a refund. We have returned a few for repair and Acer will have fed-x pick it up from you and then return it back to you at no charge. I also think they still have the best warranty (at no charge) and the extended warranty is very inexpensive as well.

sorry if I sound like a commercial but computers is where I make a living...

Solid state is very cool!! And Dell's are good. I have bought Dell servers, desktops and laptops exclusively at work for the last 6 plus years. I've only had a few minor problems, and Dell had parts to me the next day, or a person to replace the parts if I ever wanted. There is no computer brand that will never have a problem. Dell takes great care of you if/when you do.

I'm thinking about getting one of these for my wife for school. I think they're pretty sweet. I recently picked me up a new XPS and I absolutely love it. I'm glad this thing comes with XP, because there's no way it would ever push Vista.

You do realize that acer manufactures all of dells laptops right? buying an acer is IDENTICAL hardware to the Dell.

I'm not a big fan of Dell's Laptops, but the balance of their hardware is pretty good, like most things you get what you pay for. After Toshibas last revision they're as cheap as the dells, they're extremely lightweight. The best laptops on the market right now are either Sony or MAC.

My laptop is a Dell Insprion that I have been using for a few years with no issues, also have a Dell home PC for several years that has been trouble free. I'm happy with Dell products, don't see why the Mini 9 would be any different.

I'll check out the Asus eeepc, a 10" screen sounds decent. I'm just tired of my massive 17"... it's nice for visibility and using at home, but with all the traveling I do, it's a monster to haul around.

Looks like the Acer Aspire One is a better option, computerworld.com seems to like that one in a review of 4 netbooks. Although the Dell Mini 9 wasn't included, the review must have been done before the Dell existed.

That was a good link Kurt, some good info there.

I had a Dell Inspiron 17" laptop and it was too big to take anywhere.
I gave it to Kristina and got a XPS 1330 and haven't had any problems.
I ran Vista, Ubuntu, XP and now back to Vista.

the current sp1 vista runs noticeably faster than xp on our old laptop (centrino) and one of our older p4 boxes.

You must be one of the lucky ones then. Most people I talk to that are running Vista on older tops are disappointed, but that's usually because they don't have the RAM to push it. Vista operates best w/ at least 2 gigs. I'm running 4 on my desktop and it's flawless.
