The first preliminary run of the Great Basin Challenge went off well. Fifteen trail rigs and buggies showed up at the Delta fair grounds. Three trails were used (Smelter Knoll 3+, Hell's Back Bone 5+ and New Helldorado 4+). Hell's Backbone and New Helldorado were both tackled by the same group and made for one great day! Participants from the Smelter Knoll group met our group at the end of the Back Bone trail and we rode out of the Topaz area with them.
I have driven the Back Bone and Helldorado trails before without any damage, However I had some minor problems this time with my Atlas shifter and body damage to my right body panel on an obstacle on Hell's Back Bone. For lack of a better description I am going to call this obstacle the "Mangler". Without a good line, body damage "just happens".
An optional obstacle on the Back Bone was not conquered by anyone on this trip. It has never been done before and I would like to extend an invitation to the competition guys to give this one a try. The obstacle is as yet unnamed and unconquered. I was close to tipping over on it and decided to back off to come back and try it another day.
All Great Basin Challenge routes were tracked with GPS units. I will post some pictures as soon as I get them down loaded.
Thanks to all participants for coming and wheeling at the first annual Great Basin Challenge!
