Demolition Derby last weekend

Well, on Saturday my wife and I went to the demolition derby at the UT county fair in Spanish Fork. Really cool, but I was curious to hear from those who know more than me about the subject, are there any safety rules besides helmet, seatbelt and neck brace?!?!!?? I was amazed at the complete disregard for driver safety! No cages, only saw 1 or 2 "roll bars" (if you could call them that), no side bracing, etc. Basically, they had cars from the seventies with no glass and a chain or bar from the dash to the roof where the windshield should have been-I assume to keep the competitors from driving through the window. There was substantial bashing in the drivers doors, cars getting stuck on top of other cars, and in the Powder Puff round one of the girls rammed another car so hard in the pass door that it rolled upside down and her car continued up on top! The driver/passenger compartment was completely crushed and luckily the girl had the sense to lay down across the seats to not be crushed! They had to bring out the jaws of life to get her out! And then, before the next race they just popped the roof back out with the loader and raced again!!! So, for those of you in the know, is there a reason for this lack of safety regulation? was it just THIS derby or are they all like that? I thoroughly enjoyed the event but was a little concerned for the competitors safety.

Really? I was sitting right there and saw no signs of the jaws of life...????:ugh:

Yeah, it was pretty typical of the derbies I've seen. ..

That's why they sign the waiver I guess.?? I am doubtful that any of the competetors didn't know what they were getting themselves into.

I had a buddy who used to derby several times per year. He said that there are SUPPOSED to be no hits to the drivers side, and avoid head ons. The powder puff round usually means "oops, I forgot the rules"....

Maybe I was mistaken, isn't that what they brought out of the fire truck? It looked to be connected to the truck by 2 hydraulic hoses but I was almost at the top of the stands on the south side so I couldn't quite see what it was.
