watching this 1968 WWII flick, about a bunch of misfit soldiers that get turned into a bunch of commandos. Scenery looked a little.. Utah-ey, so I googled it and sho' nuff, filmed at Camp Williams. :D

So far it's kinda campy but pretty neat to see some old UT scenery. It makes me wistful and full of longing for older times.

Cliff Roberston and William Holden are in it, BCGPER. ;) heh

I love that show.

That big monster rock at the end is actually up corner canyon.

And Tacoma, did you really just type "wistful"?

That movie is a classic. can't believe you've never seen it. Crazy to see what the Wasatch Front looked like before I-15. The big battle scene at the end on the cliffs is all filmed up on top of the Lone Peak area. You really get a great glimpse of Utah and SL Counties in the background.

I did type "wistful". I tried to think of the most unlikely word I could use...

That is definitely a classic, I'm going to try and get a copy for my "old military movie" collection. I've got a couple old Reagan films, and some of the 70's classics-- Tora!Tora!Tora! and Patton, etc. Love that old stuff. The UT location was really neat to see.

How does a rah rah WWII movie stack up against Afganistan?

Pretty well, Jack-- pretty well.

-- no retarded helicopter gunners nearly killed me when I was watching the movie

-- I didn't worry about anyone blowing me up while I waited in a huge line of trucks outside the gate, while I was in my living room enjoying the movie.

-- The food is pretty good at Bagram, but it's still better at home

--no camel spiders in the movie. Big plus. They are horrible.

-- Afghanistan was pretty, wish I was allowed to take pictures, but Utah is still prettier.

-- No one launched rockets in my direction while I enjoyed Cliff Robertson's sardonic wit. This is a big contrast to when I tried to watch "Full Metal Jacket" on the balcony-- the helicopters and HMMV's searching for the cowards in the field outside the base was very distracting.

-- The movie scenery looked nice and pleasant, climate-wise. Afghanistan was roughly a million degrees and the dirt has the consistency of talcum powder. Very bad. I had some breathing issues for a couple weeks after I came back.

-- The movie made me proud to be American, that I was able to watch a movie, that was filmed at leisure, about a worthwhile effort. Afghanistan inspired a great deal of ambivalence in me, Jack-- while I and the Afghanis I spoke to despise the Taliban's oppresssion, I have very mixed feelings about helping the NSA run Asia out of that facility. I really do, and I'm about as hawkish as they come on RME-- in service of people's freedom, that is. :D

-- Movie: entertaining, light, somewhat amusing. Afghanistan: serious as a heart attack, heavy man, heavy, not amusing in the least. Did like all the Toyota vehicles we can't have here-- favorite was the 100 Series Land Cruisers with diesels, straight axles, and offset barn doors. I REALLY would like one of those.

I'd say the movie wins... even counting the money that came with Afghanistan. :D

Yup, a good flick. I've driven up to the set location a few times before all the closures. Found some machine gun links that I still have on my curio shelf.

Thanks for the post , Tacoma , good movie. Hey ,Bear, we will have to watch it together, I will show you where my uncle Ray, is in the movie. He was in the army then and got about one second part shouting "Fire". Sorry Bear, I guess I never told you that story. Ray was your Grandmothers oldest brother.

Tell him about his Aunt Miranda, too. :ugh:

:p I like these older movies, call me a sap, but I like the cleaner vision of the world they present. I don't know that things were necessarily any better then, but it sure seems like it, and I like the dream. :D

Saw a thing on Burt Lancaster last night and I think I'll have to Netflix his stuff now too. Meat burned me a copy of a movie called "Valdez Is Coming" that I thought was one of the.. most curious choices of movies to be made, it intrigued me. And after watching that special, I'm stoked to see some more of his stuff.

anyway.
